Obituary: Vernon Anton Petsch, 81, passed away on , 24, 2011, in San Antonio. Born 19, 1929 to Henry and Alma Petsch on a ranch in Luckenbach, TX, where he learned the family business of farming and ranching from his father, and would step in at age 16 to fill the void when his father was called to the Lord. He later answered the call to serve his country, which he reluctantly spoke of only when close family members asked. When he returned home, he began his career as a machinist for Pearl Brewery, where he worked for the next 40 years. Vernon or Blackie, as he was known at Pearl, was a superior baseball player known for his speed and prowess at the plate. He played at various post in the Army and on several semi-pro teams finishing his last season with a .500 batting average. He passed on his love of baseball along with countless hours of rigorous instruction to his son and nephew to the extent that his nephew, Roger Metzger, was signed to the pros and played for the Houston Astros and the San Francisco Giants. Vernon continued coaching his grandsons, never missing one of their games. He made friends at any ballpark he went to, and will be truly missed by the local baseball community, especially his friends at Capital Park. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. his retirement Vernon returned to ranching and land management. He raised exotic animals along with sheep and goats. As with all other aspects of his life there will be a huge void in the farming and ranching community. Vernon was always ready to lend a hand or give advice to anyone in need, especially to anyone interested in getting into farming and ranching. With his wife Charleen, they were founding members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by parents, Henry Petsch and Alma Jenschke Petsch; a sister, Paula Hahn; twin siblings who were stillborn; and parents-in-laws Edwin Tatsch, Olga Endlerin Tatsch; and Nellie Tatsch. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Charleen G. Petsch; a son, Thomas D. Petsch and wife Sherry; 2 grandsons, Joshua Edwin and James Wyatt Petsch; a sister, Evelyn Metzger; numerous nieces and nephews and a large extended family and friends, and last but certainly not least his best friend Beanie the dog. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4411 Moana, San Antonio, TX 78218. |
