Obituary: Lillie Mae Grantham Paynter, 89, passed away , 12, 2012. A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. , 15, 2012, at Community Memorial Chapel, 1443 North 2nd Street, Abilene, directed by Community . Lillie Mae Grantham was born 16, 1923 in Tell, Texas (near Childress) to John and Lillian Grantham. Her father was a blacksmith and her mother was a housewife. She graduated from Tell High School in 1941, then came to Abilene where she attended Draughons Business where she learned typing, shorthand, and other secretarial skills. Lillie Mae worked as an insurance secretary all of her working life. She loved to dance and for a time was a dance instructors assistant at an Arthur Murray Dance Studio. Lillie Mae met Kenneth Paynter, a grocery store owner in Abilene, on a double date in 1946. married and their first child, Kenny Karl Paynter, was born on 2, 1947. Their daughter, Jennabeth Paynter, was born on 30, 1949. Kenneth and Lillie Mae divorced in about 1953. The children went to live with their Dad in about 1958, though they remained close to their mother. Lillie Mae lived and worked in Abilene for the most part and some in Odessa, then moved to Dallas in about 1968. She worked as an insurance secretary in downtown Dallas until 1978. Lillie Mae is close to her brother, Charlie Grantham, a watchmaker in Odessa. She had two half-brothers, J.W. and Luther Grantham, who are both deceased. Her half-sister, Mary Eva Grantham Scheidbach lives in Floresville. Lillie Mae has three grandchildren: Kenny and wife Kim and their son Seth Paynter. Kenny and Kim currently live in San Antonio, Texas. Seth is a musician in Houston. Jennabeth and Bill Mayes, of Abilene, had two children: Edward Lee Mayes and Laura Michele Mayes. Eddie is a retired Master Sergeant in the Marine Corps and lives in Yuma, Arizona. He has two sons, Caleb and A.J., also living in Yuma, Arizona. Laura is a surgical assistant.
