Obituary: Charles Bryden Parker, age 83, passed away on 25, 2010 in Bryan, Texas. He was born in Brownsville, Texas on 1, 1926, to parents Hebert and Maude Parker. Charles was called Flying Charley Parker at San Antonios Thomas Jefferson High School in 1941-1944. He was the State Champion in the 100 yard and 220 yard events for three years and won 53 consecutive events. In 1944, at the age of 17, Charley and his good friend Jack McCaleb travelled to New York City where he won the Senior AAU 220 and the Junior 100. The AAU Championship in those days was the National Championship. Charley established several high school track records; one record lasted 10 years and another stood for 18 years. At Jefferson, he was a straight A student, President of the Student Council and a National Honor Student. In 1944, Charley received a track scholarship to the University of Texas and was also drafted into the Army. In 1945, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. Combat Platoon Leader at the Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA. OCS candidates at that time were most likely being trained for the invasion of Japan. He was transferred to the Southwest Pacific and ended up in GHQ, General MacArthurs HQ in Tokyo, Japan and assigned to the Adjutant Generals Department as a top secret control officer processing messages for the headquarters. This was followed by his being put in charge of the stadium complex that was built for the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. At an Eighth Army track meet, he ran a 100 meter race on a moisture laden track that was off the then World Record by eight-tenths of a second. Charley returned to UT in 1947, where he was a four time SWC 220 champion and the NCAA champion in 1950, an All-American in 1948, Collegiate Track Honor Roll in 1949 and 1950, as well as being the premier anchor for UTs outstanding relay teams. In 1950 he broke the World Record at the Border Olympics in the 220 by running the race in 20 seconds, which was three-tenths better than the record; however, due to excessive wind assistance, the record was not allowed. At UT, Charley received an undergraduate degree in English and a Doctor of Law. He was President of the T-Association, a Texas Cowboy, a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and Outstanding Athlete in 1950. He later became president of the San Antonio Longhorn Club, was inducted to the Longhorn Hall of Honor at UT in 1977, and was also inducted to the San Antonio Sports Association Hall of Fame in 2002. Charley was a successful lawyer and worked for Tenneco, Florida Gas, and was also with Forest Oil Corporation the Dorn family of San Antonio in both San Antonio and Denver, CO, where the family resided on the 12th Fairway of the Cherry Hills Golf Course, home of the Hillsdilley. There the Parkers became good friends with Doak Walker, Jack Vickers, Tobin Rote, Keith Brown, Darrell Royal, Harry Trueblood and John and Jere Thompson to mention a few. Later, he worked for prominent oilman Bill Moss in Dallas. His last business position was as CEO of Clark & Courts, a family office supply and printing business in Houston, Galveston and Dallas.
