Obituary: James Alton Poole, 87, was born 26, 1923 in Dyer, Tennessee and entered into rest on May 2, 2011. He was a member of East Win Christian Church. He was a 59 year member and twice Past Master of Bartlett Lodge #211 F & AM serving in 1970 and 1997, he also served as Instructor and Master for many years. He was Patron of Woodlawn Chapter 74 of the Order of the Eastern Star seven times and server as Grand Sentinel in 1999. Mr. Poole was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn and his son James A Poole Jr. He is survived by his wife Phyllis and son, George Arthur Poole (Betty), of Memphis, two stepsons, Randy and David Boswell , ten grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchildren . Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm on and Services will be at 10 am Memphis Poplar Chapel followed by a masonic service and burial in Memphis Memory Gardens. Obituary: Edith Louise (Creasey) Poole, 91, passed away Nov. 13, 2015, in Chattanooga, TN. She was born Feb. 10, 1924, in High Point, NC, but had been a resident of Chattanooga, TN, since 1965. She was the daughter of Fred Creasey and Esther Dorsett Creasey. She was a graduate of the class of 1941 at Allen Jay High School. She was the ex-wife of Herman E. Poole, also of High Point, NC, who predeceased her in 2012. Edith is survived by her three children, Cynthia Poole Slack and husband Darrel, of Chattanooga, TN, Vickie Poole Walters and husband Richard, of Lakeland, FL, Timothy E. Poole and wife Amanda, two step grandsons, Matthew and Joseph Matteson of Archdale, NC. Visitation will be held at Sechrest , 6-8pm Nov. 19, 2015, Archdale, NC. A graveside service will be held Fri. Obituary: Clara Ruth Poole, age 89, passed away on , 6, 2014. Ruth was born the youngest child to Conner E. and Lillian Hardison Coggin on 6, 1925. She grew up on a farm in Giles and was a high school sweetheart with Charles H. Poole. were married on 6, 1944. While he served in the Army Infantry during WWII, Ruth helped her widowed mother pay off the farm, then moved to Pulaski and took a job at the shoe factory where her exceptional productivity set the pace for others. the war, both Ruth and Charles enrolled at Martin in Pulaski, completing one year there. then enrolled at Peabody in Nashville. Ruth put her college education on hold as they began a family. As a pastor’s wife, she willingly packed the household periodically and refurbished parsonage after parsonage, beautifying the grounds of each with her beloved perennials and flowering trees. Over the years, as mother of three, she served as Cub Scout den mother, nurse, cheerleader, arbiter, life coach, vacation planner and wardrobe designer while juggling gardening, canning, household finances and volunteerism. At the age of 38, Ruth re-entered college and graduated from George Peabody with a B.A., majoring in elementary education. Upon graduation in 1964, she began teaching at Haywood Elementary School in Nashville, and later at the Tech Campus School and public school district in Cookeville, and finally at Lockland and Kirkpatrick Elementary Schools in Nashville – in all, teaching 28 years before retiring in 1992. Mostly, she taught first grade, but regardless of the grade, she was there to instill a love of learning in her young students. While teaching, she returned to Peabody to complete her Masters Degree, and a master she was at experiential teaching. She loved to immerse the kids in projects like campus gardening that would become the laboratories for learning science, doing math, reliving history, writing stories and exploring teamwork. She was thrilled when even the most improbable class bested the school, city and state averages on tests. She was recognized often for her teaching accomplishments, but her greatest reward was seeing a child get hooked on reading, develop self-esteem in public speaking, or reach out to help a struggling classmate. Always an accomplished seamstress, patternmaker, milliner and avid crafter, she developed a real passion for quilting in retirement. Ruth made bed quilts, throws, wall hangings and baby quilts, many gracing her own home while others are counted as treasures in the homes of family and friends. She would coordinate major fundraising projects for church bazaars and make annual quilt donations to charities (sometimes as many as 20 a year to agencies such as Miriam’s Promise). Ruth loved God and loved others. She was generous in every way, and served wherever needed. As President of the United Methodist Women at McKendree United Methodist Church, she inspired mission and ministry and growth and challenged members to become a 5-star unit, which they did year after year. Regularly, she cooked meals for Nashville’s homeless persons through Room in the Inn, highly regarded for her dishes of turnip greens from her garden, pinto beans and cornbread. Throughout their marriage, Ruth was an active member of the Methodist Church wherever Charles was appointed; in retirement, they have been fully associated with Belle Meade United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling and achieved her goal of visiting in all 50 states. Ruth especially enjoyed the beauty of the U.S. National Parks and discovered the intrigue of attending World’s Fairs. A real thrill was going to Ireland, the homeland of her great grandfather. Ruth’s last years surely must have been a challenge for her as she struggled with dementia. It was sad to see her lay down her sewing, to see her unable to read the books she had taught many kids to read, to see her creative mind at rest. Many who met her in recent years never knew the force for good that we knew, but we will always remember the sparkle of her blue eyes, and the squeeze of her hand as she said, “I love you”. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings – brothers George, Robert, Thurman, and Fred Coggin, and sisters Louise Whitworth, and Frances Coggin. She also was preceded in death by her older son Charles H. Poole Jr. Surviving are her loving family: husband, Charles Poole; daughter, Dian Volkmer; son, John Poole (Tania); and daughter-in-law, Trish Poole; three grandchildren, Sam Poole (Tracy), Krista Carpenedo (Mike), and Aaron Poole (Christa); and six great grandchildren, Jay and Reese, Emmy and Kaia, and Ashlynn and Addie; and two sisters-in law, Willa Mae and Lizzie Coggin.
