Obituary: COLUMBIA - service for Barbara Bridges Poage, 84, will be held , 5, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Greenlawn in Columbia, South Carolina with Reverend Michael Hillard officiating. Mrs. Poage, wife of the late Thomas Warren Poage, died , 2, 2015. Born in Sumner, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Hugh Bridges and Thelma Long Bridges. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1948 and later graduated from the University of Georgia in 1952 with a degree in Anthropology with an emphasis in Archaeology. She minored in voice and appeared in many operas. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and Delta Omicron Music Society. Mrs. Poage worked as a Social Worker in Atlanta, Georgia for many years before moving to Columbia, South Carolina. She was a founding member of St. James United Methodist Church where she served several terms on the Board of the Women of the Church. She served as a volunteer at Lexington Hospital for seven years. Mrs. Poage, known to family as Nana, was celebrated for her devotion to family, sharp sense of humor, strong moral character, and for her thoughtful and challenging mind. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister and daughter. Mrs. Poage was known for her love of reading, anything from novels to medical journals and keeping up with current events was a passion. She loved taking off at a moment’s notice to help with grandchildren and "granddogs" and considered it her greatest joy. She was an avid Bulldog but, out of love for her children, was converted to a devoted Gamecock and loved keeping up with the games. Nana considered motherhood as her most important job, and her primary role in life was to inspire and love her children and grandchildren. Although the end of her life was challenging, she navigated it with dignity and integrity, and definitely on her own terms. Mrs. Poage is survived by her daughter, Melissa Anne Poage of Hopkins, S.C., her son Michael Doling Poage and wife, Lisa of Shelby, N.C., daughter Susan Poage Prickett and husband, Keever of Columbia. She was predeceased by her sister, Anne Bridges Giannotti and survived by her brother-in-law Hugo Giannotti of Long Island, New York. Nana has five grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Prickett and Mary Alexis Prickett, Ryan Bridges Poage, Caroline Elizabeth Poage and Miles Doling Poage. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all those that helped care for our Mom this past year and a half. We know for sure that God places people in our path meant to guide and comfort us as we travel on this journey of great loss. are Angels to us. Thanks to The Palmettos of Parklane, Compassionate Hospice, Daybreak Adult Services and Michaela's Angelic givers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Compassionate Hospice Foundation, 248 East Chestnut Hill Road, Suite 4, Newark, DE 19713. |
