Obituary: Margie Carpenter Powell, age 89, passed away , 12, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Born 8, 1925, in Catawba , she was the daughter of the late Coyte Donald Carpenter and Catherine Estelle Hefner Carpenter. Margie was a 1942 graduate of Oxford High School where she earned the honor of valedictorian of her class. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton, where she was a former choir member and member of the ladies circle. She was a former member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Claremont. She was a cub scout and brownie leader and loved playing bridge. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 69 years, Charles Robert Bob Powell, of the home; sons, Charles Robert Rob Powell and wife, Linda of Catawba, NC, William D. Bill Powell and wife, Dawn of Newton, NC; daughter, Cathy R. Powell and partner, Janie Lee of Las Vegas, NV; and grandson, William D. Will Powell, II of Newton, NC. The funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m., , 14, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Newton, with the Rev. Dr. David Greene and Rev. Lara Greene officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview in Newton. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 926, Newton, NC 28658, or to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658. |

Obituary: Margaret Viola Evans Powell 1930 - 2021 Gastonia – Margaret Viola Evans Powell, 90 passed away peacefully on 14, 2021, at Courtland Terrace surrounded by her loving family. She was born in York , South Carolina on 5, 1930, to the late Thomas and Lydia Arrowood Evans. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jack McCelland Powell; her siblings, O.T., George, Albert, Lee, Mary, Mae, Irene, Frances, and Lucille. Ms. Powell retired from Threads, Inc. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Dallas. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister; and enjoyed traveling with her husband and family. She also loved gardening and working in the yard with her husband Jack; together they took great pride in the care of many azaleas. had many wonderful flowers and azaleas and were voted yard of the week by the Gaston Gazette. It was not uncommon for people to come by and admire their beautiful yard. Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth Powell Paysour, and husband David; her grandchildren, Dana Paysour Smith, and husband Dorian; Allison Paysour and husband Tommy Freeman; two great-grandchildren, Parker and Gavin Smith. Visitation for family and friends will be 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., , 19th at Withers & Whisenant . The Celebration of Life Service will follow at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel with Pastor Caroll Flack and Pastor Billy Ervin officiating. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the loving staff at Courtland Terrace for standing in as Family to Margaret while COVID prevented them from being with her. The love and support from the staff and caregivers were much appreciated. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, Matthew II section.
