Obituary: Billie Ephraim Pittman, 82, completed his earthly sojourn on 28 2014 at Burke Hospice and Palliative , following a lengthy period of declining health. He was born 30 1932 to Jonah and Mary Ellen Phillips Pittman on their family farm in eastern Johnston , NC He and Betty Jane Betsy Dodd met in Ulster , New York, where both were working in the summer of 1950 in a mountaintop hotel resort. were married in Bellefontaine, Ohio, just prior to his senior year in Pharmacy School at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Following his 1954 graduation he became licensed as a pharmacist, a profession which he served for over fifty years. He served two years in the Army of the United States (1955-1957) as a pharmacist in the base hospital at Fort Eustis, Virginia, and two more years in the North Carolina National Guard in Mocksville, NC. He worked as a pharmacist in independent retail stores in Greensboro, Morehead City, New Bern, and Salisbury, NC, and Williamsburg, Virginia, before moving to Burke in 1962 to work with the Rock Drug Store. He later became Chief Pharmacist at Valdese General Hospital, where he conceived and implemented the first unit dose system for that hospital, a contribution of which he was rightfully proud. that position, he served in several retail pharmacies in the area in part-time and full-time positions. He served a term as deacon in the Waldensian Presbyterian Church in Valdese. Billie was a quiet, private, gentle family man, with his children and grandchildren being his pride and joy. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, boating, water skiing, and gardening with them. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betsy; son Timothy Ephraim Pittman and wife Kathy Jeannette Fulbright Pittman; daughter Julia Dawn Pittman Dale; grandchildren Lauren Kacey Pittman Frogge (Jacob Ryan), Colby Ethan Pittman, Hayley Anna Scarlett Dale, Holly Amber Catherine Dale, and Elijah Paul Timothy Dale, several nieces and nephews, and a first great grandchild-to-be. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his sister, Thelma Ruth Pittman Creech (Joseph Clifton); half -brothers, Jonah Arnold Pittman (Elgah Godwin) and James Willard Pittman (Mary Ellen Hines) of Johntson , NC; and half -sister, Velna Mae Pittman McClure (Samuel Orin) of Asheville, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative , 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690 or to another cause of choice. A Service will be held 2:00PM 2, 2015 in the Chapel of Heritage Service. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Heritage Service. Interment will follow the service at Hillcrest in Valdese, NC. |
