Obituary: Charlotte - Ruth Herring Philbeck, 89, passed away peacefully on 5, 2015, after making an extraordinary impact on every person who was fortunate enough to encounter her. Born on 4, 1926 in Rose Hill, NC, she grew up as the third of seven children, and the oldest girl, developing a curiosity and fearlessness early on that would carry her through a long and active life. In 1946, she met and married James Carl Philbeck in Durham, and they had two daughters, Sandy and Kathy. Carl died in 1985, Ruth stayed in their home off of Albemarle Road by herself, but even though she lived independently, she never lived alone: for 30 years, she surrounded herself with close friends and loved ones, taking care of them and providing endless support to her daughters and their families, including five grandchildren, Meghan Bullock, Nancy Gavin, Daryl Putnam, Allison and Todd Gilchrist, and two great-grandchildren, Sully and Olivia Gavin. Whats most remarkable about this time is that even though we have all gotten older, she never seemed to age: merrily driving her family to and from dance lessons, music recitals, doctors appointments and (most importantly) the comic book store, she effortlessly maintained her youthful sense of humor, her compassion, and general joie de vivre. This is a woman, who at 74, went to a Ricky Martin concert with her daughters and granddaughters, and climbed through the sunroof to dance afterward, when their car was stuck in traffic. Her empathy for others has not only provided us with a constant source of comfort, but a guidepost for how to treat people. Although she was unafraid to engage her liberal grandchildren in lively conversations about politics, for example, we never heard her say a cross word about anyone, and she repeatedly reminded us - less through her words than her actions - to respect and appreciate the people in our lives, who both challenge and help us, in ways big and small. She showed us the value, and the meaning to others, in gestures of consideration, and tradition, such as gathering family at her house on Christmas Day. Ruth was strong; she raised or helped raise three generations of children, nurturing them through their formative years, and becoming a confidante and friend to all of them in adulthood. In addition to taking care of herself, and her family, she actively pursued hobbies, maintained a healthy social life, and faithfully attended Memorial United Methodist Church. And Ruth was silly; for years, she hosted slumber parties for her grandchildren, feeding them spaghetti, showing holiday specials she recorded off the television, and offering impromptu dance lessons (she was especially good at ruckin\), when not making excursions to various locations around Charlotte. In the final few weeks of her life, she was visited daily by family and friends, who were eager to spend time with her and provide her with some small amount of the comfort and support that she had once provided them. This is the legacy that she leaves behind - not just a home that provided the bedrock for her family even when it wasn always able to be together, or the lifetime of memories to which she is inextricably attached, but that exchange of kindness, that unconditional love that she not only gave out to everyone in her life, but that she inspired them to reciprocate not just to her, but share with the rest of the world. Ruth is survived by her brother, Archie Herring; daughter, Sandy and husband John Gilchrist; daughter, Kathy and husband Jim Bullock; grandchildren, Todd and Allison Gilchrist, Daryl Putnam, Nancy Gavin, and Meghan Bullock; and great-grandchildren Olivia and Sully Gavin. A visitation will be held at Memorial United Methodist Church from 12:30-1:15 p.m. on , 9th, followed by the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
