Obituary: Marie Perry, 86, passed away on 1, 2014, at Transitions Life (formerly known as Hospice of Wake Country) in the loving presence of her family. She was born in Nash on May 29, 1928, to the late Inez Finch and Milton Astor Poole. Marie grew up in a farming community in Nash where the Finches taught her the value of a close extended family. She spent her teenage years in Washington, DC, during World War II, while her mother worked for the federal government. She spoke fondly of those years living in the city with her mother, going to football games and exploring DC with her friends. She met her future husband, Willard Samuel Perry (Will), in Louisburg, NC, and they were married in Dillon, SC, on May 17, 1946. had five children, Willard Samuel Perry, Jr., Susan Parker Perry, David Alan Perry, Leatha Marie Perry and Mark Arrington Perry. During her children's early years, Marie was active at Highland Methodist Church in Raleigh and in her children's Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. her children entered school, she began a lengthy career in retail with Mac Josephs in Cameron Village, JCPenney, Sears, Thalhimer's and The Bargain Box, which she managed for ten years. In 1965 she and Will opened an eastern-style NC barbeque restaurant in Cocoa, Florida, which she managed. Those years in Florida exposed the growing Perry children to new schools, new friends, a fervent love of living on the water and the new era of US space exploration at nearby Cape Canaveral. Continuing an active life into her 60's, Marie was an involved member of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) and served as a nanny and childcare associate. During her 70's, she worked as an early childhood vision screener at the NC Society to Prevent Blindness, as an administrator for imported goods at RDU International Airport and as a filing assistant at Global Software. Schooled by life and a tireless enthusiasm for art and learning, Marie enrolled in creative writing classes at NCSU in her 70's. In 1963 artist Clementine Hunter once refused payment from Marie for one of Ms. Hunter's her soon-to-be, world-famous American folk art paintings, saying to Marie, "us artists have got to stick together!" When her children would ask how she acquired her vast knowledge of the works of great writers, countries all over the world, theory and philosophy, Marie would reply,"I read a lot." An eagerness to learn with an open mind was one of the many traits she passed down to her children. Marie considered possibilities of the supernatural and introduced her sons to Silva Mind Control. She believed in and explored the possibility that there was more than one answer to the many questions of life and death. Marie always said her greatest accomplishment was raising five wonderful children. She cared deeply about their kindness to and support of one another. She did not live a life of grand gestures; she lived a life of many inspiring acts that modeled compassion for others. Throughout her life, she was a role model for kindness, gentleness and grace. She was truly a beautiful woman inside and out, and her inherent sweet nature and warm, unforgettable smile revealed to all who knew her the purity of her soul. She demonstrated a deep, lifelong appreciation for the earth's abundant beauty, a philosophy perhaps born of her Cherokee heritage. An avid gardener, she created a place of beauty and solace in her backyard in Raleigh. She carefully set each stone, shoveled earth and rock and planted trees, shrubs and flowers in a design that afforded a perpetual feast for the eyes. Preceding Marie in death, along with her parents, were her beloved stepfather Freddy Schnitzer, her former husband Willard Samuel Perry (Will), her son Willard Samuel Perry, Jr. (Sam) and her half-sister Betty Poole Wilson. Surviving to treasure her memory are her half-brother Reggie Poole, her half-sister Diane Poole and the entire Poole family, her sister-in-law Sadie Johnson Perry, her children Susan Rouse and husband Charles, David Perry and wife Cheryl, Leatha Ritchie and husband Bob, and Mark Perry; her grandchildren Sammy Perry (Leslie), Justin Perry, Jennifer Gilliam (Matt), Chris Rouse (Tara), David Simon Perry, Ashley Eisma (Ryan), Katherine Perry, Laura Ritchie, and Matt Ritchie and her five great-grandchildren. The family of Marie Perry is deeply grateful to all who played a significant role in her life. Your many acts of love, support and kindness will be remembered always. Please join the Perry family for a celebration of Marie's life at 1:00 on , 13, 2014, at Brown-Wynne 300 St. Mary's Street in Raleigh. If you would like to make a memorial donation in her honor, please do so to the charity of your choice or Hospice of Wake . |

Obituary: Mack Donald Perry, Jr., 88, died 14, 2015 at Springmoor Life Retirement Community, Raleigh. Born 5, 1926 in an eastern Wake farmhouse near Rolesville, he was the son of Mack D. Perry, Sr., and Lovie Robertson Perry. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother Everette Gay Perry, his sister Sybil Perry Watkins, and his brother H. Glenn Perry. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Singleton Perry, and his children, Alice, Don, and Giles of Raleigh. Mack grew up during the Depression on a tobacco, corn, and cotton farm near the corner of present day Mitchell Mill and Quarry Roads in eastern Wake . Mack attended elementary school at Wakelon School in Zebulon, and later at Rolesville School. In his teenage years he drove the school bus at Rolesville High School, and graduated from there in 1943. Mack lost his mother at age 13, but he and his siblings were cared for with devotion by his father, a cherished aunt, Lucy Perry Yeargin, his step mother Ruby Clark Perry, and his extended Robertson and Perry families. At home, Mack helped his father farm, and run their country store, which also served as the local voting precinct. Mack's lifelong interest in the political process likely began with the conversations he heard around the store stove, and he remained a loyal Democrat his entire life. Mack briefly attended Wake Forest before volunteering to join the Navy at age 18 in 1944 during World War II. He served in Oahu, Hawaii at Headquarters Fleet Marine Force, as a Pharmacists Mate. Following World War II, Mack returned to Wake , and helped his family build a new home near Mitchell Mill from recycled lumber obtained from surplus buildings at Camp Butner. Mack returned to Wake Forest , graduating with a B.S. degree in Business Administration, and a minor in Mathematics, in 1950. In the spring of 1947, Mack met his future bride and love of this life, Dorothy Lou Singleton of Raleigh, at an event attended by Wake Forest and Meredith students. Mack and Dorothy were married 13, 1949 at First Baptist Church of Raleigh, Salisbury Street, and remained happily married for over 65 years. Mack began his lifelong love of bridge at Wake Forest , and he and Dorothy played bridge and also enjoyed square dancing for many years. Mack and Dorothy began their married life in a home near Five Points and faithfully and lovingly raised their three children there and later, in a home in North Hills. During his years living in North Hills, Mack was a charter member and served on the founding Board of the Northbrook Swim Club, a neighborhood pool. Mack started work at Noland in Raleigh in 1950, and remained with the company for most of his work life, retiring as Credit Manager in 1987. When not at work, Mack was a faithful and devoted member of First Baptist Church, Salisbury Street, Raleigh, from his marriage until his death, where he served as a deacon, and as President of the Everette Miller School Class. Mack was active in civic affairs in Raleigh his entire adult life, as a member of the Jaycees, where his served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors, and as a member of the Capital City Kiwanis Club, where he was honored for having perfect attendance for 46 years from 1967 to 2013. He worked tirelessly to raise funds for the children's charities supported by Kiwanis, from selling peanuts to selling pancake day plates. Mack served the Capital City Kiwanis Club as Fundraising Chairman, on the Board of Directors, as Vice President, and was twice named as Kiwanian of the Year. Mack was also a long-time member of the Bull and Bear Investment Club. In his early working years, he enjoyed team bowling. Through retirement, he enjoyed supervising production on the family farmland, raising wheat, soybeans, and tobacco. In his later years, Mack enjoyed traveling with his wife and family on several trips to Europe, returning to Hawaii, and many weekends at Myrtle Beach, SC and Blowing Rock, NC. Mack was a devoted and loving father and friend, dignified, honest, and ethical. He exemplified the qualities of kindness, patience, and acceptance. Mack was known to say "there are enough ways to go around -- for everyone to have one" a saying he had heard from his father, an authentic expression of love and tolerance for his fellow men and women, which he demonstrated every day. He loved every member of his extended Perry, Robertson, Singleton, and Freeman families, his friends, neighbors, and colleagues. He was joyful in their company and care. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family wishes to thank the staff of Springmoor Life Community, and its Stewart , for their devoted care during his residence there. We are grateful for you, and we thank you. A memorial service will be held , 20 at 11 am at Springmoor Life Retirement Community, 1500 Sawmill Rd, Raleigh. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Mack D. Perry, Jr. may be made to First Baptist Church, Salisbury Street, Raleigh, or the Kiwanis International Foundation. are under the care of Brown-Wynne 300 Saint Mary's St. Raleigh, NC 27605 www.brownwynne.com |
