In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to a charity of your choice. Everyone that knew John Pizzo knew that he was a kind, loving, gregarious, generous and very knowledgeable man. He had a very inquisitive mind and deep interest in people and many different subjects in life. His family knew him as a good son, brother, a very loving and devoted husband, wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and cousin. He lived his life by very high principles and set a good example for his family and friends. He was kind and helpful to many other people, including strangers, and so everyone liked John. His special interests, after his family and eating, included working in his yard or on his house, talking about investments or politics, reminiscing about WWII and other history, and actually he could converse on just about any subject. He would also listen to what others had to say and considered their opinions. He never stopped learning and showing interest in life right up the day before his death, and his mind and memory were as sharp as ever. For example, while in his 80s he took computer courses and learned how to use a computer. Much of what made John the man he was can be traced back to early life experiences, including his first 10 years of life in Belmonte Mezzagno, Italy (Sicily) and his experiences as an Italian-American immigrant starting in 1929. During the early years in Italy and then in Rochester, NY, John did not have many of the modern conveniences we have to today, including electricity in the early years. He also had to learn a new language when he came to America in , 1929, but did so quickly enough that he only was set back one year and was able to graduate in , 1939 from Jefferson High in Rochester. John, at an early age, also learned about hard work and the rewards of such work. Not only did he work in his fathers garden, but he very quickly learned the value of hard work and entrepreneurship while a teenager, being a very hard working paperboy with more than one paper route. That hard work, which would continue to the day of his death, allowed him to have spending money to buy things, including his first 3 cars and even a trip to NYC to see the Worlds Fair in 1939. Upon graduation in of 1939, John realized his best opportunity for employment and advancement in life, given the jobs available at the time, was enlisting in the Navy on 6, 1939, six days after WWII started. However, before he enlisted in the Navy, he met a person that would forever change his life and be the center of his life for the next 76 years, Mary Borreggine. She had her eye on him for a while, but it was in of 1939 that they met in a cooking class at school, which in retrospect was very important because she would be his excellent personal cook for some 70 years of married life. Mary asked John to a dance, and even though the date did not go flawlessly due to his car getting towed, he was hooked on Mary from that time onward. Mary would wait to marry John over 6 years later on 4, 1945, shortly before he was discharged from the Navy. John experienced many things during his years in the Navy. He also met many high-ranking military and politicians, like King George of England, and saw many places in the world in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and was involved in many important events of the war. John was sent to radio school and became a radio man first on the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa, a heavy cruiser. He learned Morse code, using radio, visual light and physical signaling, and became so proficient that he was commended for the fine accurate job he was doing by a Rear Admiral F. B. Stump. Decoding all the news kept him well-informed on what was happening back home and around the world and expanded his mental horizons. One important message he decoded while docked in the Philadelphia Navy yard was on 7, 1941 was The Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor. His ship immediately set sail out of harbor but nothing happened to them since the attack was limited to Pearl Harbor. marriage to Mary in of 1945 and honorable discharge from the Navy in after his enlistment period expired, John and Mary moved in with Marys mother and younger sisters because apartments were scarce. He used his G.I. bill to take a cooperative course in electrical engineering at RIT, while working at Kodak part time. He completed the course in 1948 and started to work for Kodak full-time, but did not enjoy the work that much and was laid off in 1949. He went back to business school at RBI for two years, taking up accounting and graduated with the second highest marks in the class continued... |
