Obituary: Helga Elizabeth Pope, age 68 passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on 7, 2014. She was born in Sugarland, Texas to the late Winfred and Lois Barnes in 1946. Family, friends and faith were Helgas love and joy. She lived her life with vigor and always had a smile for everyone. Beautiful inside and out, her laugh and love were contagious. Her sweet disposition, strength and positive outlook were an inspiration to all. Her childhood years were spent in Texas, Cuba then Miami, Florida where she graduated from Miami Palmetto High School. She went on to attend the University of Alabama and University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) where she studied Business. She held various Administrative Assistant and Secretarial positions throughout her life but always considered Motherhood her proudest achievement. Her children Helga and Christopher would agree. She was a devout Christian whose volunteer mission work led her to Mexico, Israel, India and South Africa to work with various organizations to help the less fortunate and spread the word of God. She often told others how thankful and blessed she was – even during the most difficult times. She was involved with various Christian organizations and Churches throughout her life accumulating life long friends and unshakeable faith. Helga never met a stranger and was known for her greeting – Hey Babydoll and had a hug and kind word for everyone. She was one of a kind and will be painfully missed by everyone who knew her. Her home was always filled with her childrens friends because Ms. Helga was so loving and so much fun. She also had an open loving heart for animals. Any stray that crossed her property hit the jackpot because they would then enjoy unconditional love, unlimited food and treats, weekly baths and continuous care. Her yorkie, Tigger remained by her side until her last breath. Helga took the role of citizenship with great seriousness. She was proud to be an American and had ultimate respect for our military and felt that voting was not only a right but a duty and privilege. One of her proudest moments was when her son Christopher joined the Armed Forces. Both her parents, brother and son were honorable members of our Nations Military. Helga could never hear our National Anthem without it bringing her to tears. Her respect and reverence for this Country was immeasurable. Helga was met with various challenges throughout her life but always persevered. Diagnosed with Cervical Cancer at 40 she fought and beat it. At 50 she was diagnosed with Melanoma and again fought and beat it. In of 2009 she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Colon Cancer and was given months to live but once again beat the odds and lived an additional 5+ years. She never let cancer define her or dictate her days. Those who knew her would tell you she was strongest woman they have ever known - always positive, selfless and without complaint. The family considers her continuous fight to beat the odds a miracle and example of her faith and strength beyond measure. Helga is survived by her two loving children, Helga B. Pope and Christopher Nathan Pope both residents of Denham Springs, Louisiana, her sister Gretchen Barnes Annan of Fruita, CO and brother Winfred Clark Barnes Jr. of Tucson, AZ. Helga and Chris are so very thankful to Aunt Gretchen, Uncle Ron and Uncle Clark who came to care for her around the clock during her last days in her home while honoring and abiding by her last wishes. She also leaves behind many caring relatives and loving friends. The family would like to offer heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Patrick Stagg at Medical Oncology of Baton Rouge, his amazing staff, Aim and St. Joseph Hospice for providing excellent care administered with hope and compassion. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Cancer Services of Baton Rouge, 550 Lobdell Avenue, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70806. We also ask that those who knew and loved Helga do as she would have done – spend time with your family, love, laugh, live life with vigor, exercise your faith, be selfless, pray and give thanks for your daily blessings.
