Obituary: There was a huge celebration in heaven on night, 27, 2016, to welcome home Mardell Louise Paustian. services will be held at 2:00 p.m. , 1, 2016 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on , 31, 2016 at the mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park . In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to New Hope Presbyterian Church or Milestones Area Agency on Aging. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rungemortuary.com. Mardell was born on May 29, 1921 to Elmer and Lydia (Kistenmacher) Haase. She married Vingene Paustian on 19, 1945. Mardell worked side by side with Vin on the farm for 45 years. She cared for him until his passing on 21, 2005. Mardell was a selfless, kind and loving individual. She always thought of others well-being before her own needs. Mardell never had an unkind word to say, and you felt uplifted after spending time with her. Mardell found comfort and peace in her religious beliefs. Every night she would pray, asking God to bless her family and friends here on earth as well as those who were already in heaven. Mardell so loved her children and grandchildren. She spent countless hours cooking, playing and just loving each and every one of them. All have their own special memories of time spent with her. Mardell was a diehard Chicago Cubs and Iowa men and womens basketball fan. She enjoyed the fellowship at her Church meal site and the bingo that followed. Mardell lovingly prepared meals especially for her family, and she was the best pie maker in the world. Mardell is survived by her children, Marvin (Judy) and Ginny (Jeff); grandchildren, Jeff, Carma, John, Karen, Linda, Brittany and Megan; thirteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A special thank you to the health professionals at Genesis Medical - East Campus for their compassion during Mardells stay. |

Obituary: Larry is gone. Long live Larry in our hearts and memories. Lawrence Howard Pauly, 72, of Peosta, died peacefully at 10:30 p.m. on , 29th, at Luther Manor, after receiving last rites. A lifelong Dubuquer, he was the proud son of Ruth and Nick Pauly (both deceased). He loved them dearly and often said that he couldn have wished for better parents. instilled in Larry a love of language, of people, and of sport, a passion for fair play and giving it his all. Chuckles, as he was sometimes called way back when for his sunny disposition, was educated at Sacred Heart Grade School, Loras Academy and Wahlert High School, and Loras . Larry worked as a newspaperman almost all his adult life, starting in high school as a stringer for the Telegraph Herald, receiving phone calls of late sports scores and reporting them for the next days news. He worked his way up at the paper under the tutelage of legendary staffers like Jim Geladas, and was strongly influenced by John McCormick, Hal Lagerstrom and Bill ONeill. By virtue of his hard work, dependability, and high standards, which he expected others to follow, too, he became a fixture at the copy desk as an editor, putting out the paper, in his words. Larry paid forward what he learned about newspapering from his elders, mentoring younger THers such as Amy Gilligan, Gary Dura, Mike Day, and many others, some of whom became good friends inside and outside the newsroom. Beyond his work, Larry was a good man with a good heart who led a good life. He was blessed with countless good friends, enjoyed many good times, and experienced a fair balance of wins and losses, smiles and frowns, disappointments and successes. Look behind a sometimes grumpy and impatient exterior and you would find a genuine person, a generous soul, who was caring and giving especially toward the people and causes that he loved. Larry was a no-nonsense, no-frills kind of guy with simple tastes. He was fascinated with numbers and statistics. Larry knew and spoke his mind. He seemed to have few filters, so sometimes he may have come off as a bit crude or (ahem!) abrasive. Sometimes it was the pain of his R.A. talking. Yet he knew what it was to be a gentleman; Ruth made sure of that. And on any field of competition, Larry played hard but fair, always hustling. He hated hot-dogging, showboating, trash-talking and chest-thumping. He was not a braggart; Nick made sure of that. Larry was many things to many people. He was a loving son who spent many years at home looking after his parents. He was a fun-loving brother who enjoyed a road trip with his siblings to watch the Cardinals play, or an outing on the river to catch bass. He was a respected journalist with considerable writing and editing skills, though probably better known for his regular Outdoors with Larry column than his editorship. He was an accomplished athlete (Yes! Really!) in several sports, loved competition, was a good sport and unselfish team player, and insisted on playing the game the right way. Once he flirted with a 300 bowling series. He often amazed people with his mobility and skills as a City Rec basketball player, was a respected pitcher on two Prairie League and some tournament baseball teams, was a valued member of a fast-pitch softball team (Dons Meats) who could knock the cover off the ball. He was teacher-coach of the womens softball team Larrys Lovelies, combining expert instruction, serious (?) play, and enjoyable extra innings at a local watering hole with TH co-workers--the basis for some lasting friendships. He loved being out in the natural world, and thrilled to catch sight of eagles, hawks, great blue herons, ducks, geese, pelicans, orioles, cardinals, and a wide variety of fish, many of which he caught and released. He had a photographers eye for the wonders of nature. He routinely enjoyed feeding the birds on his backyard deck. He was a benefactor/philanthropist who donated to countless causes that benefited people, wildlife, and the environment. He was an expert bass fisherman who was a teacher on and of the river, and who helped hook his brothers and his friends Mike and Gary and their young sons—and many others—on the wonders of fishing and the Great Outdoors. He was never known to exaggerate the size or number of his catch, and had no use for those who did. He hated fishing in the wind. He was a greyhound racing handicapper of considerable skill who spent many hours studying he puppies and watching them perform with his track buddies. He was an innocent flirter with his fathers eye for attractive, personable women, particularly a special two at the track, two at Hy-Vee, many of his nurses and some of his colleagues. Buck was also a masterful reunion organizer who has fondly called together his far-flung TH co-workers each year to reminisce and enjoy each others company once again; he has done the same for a group of former Loras classmates, friends, and their families—the annual Bucks Boys Reunion—for a good many years. It bears repeating that Larry was blessed with countless friends, too many to mention here. But please know of his gratitude—perhaps unspoken--for how you helped to shape his life and personality. You know who you are; please take comfort in knowing you touched and were touched by him as a F.O.L., a Friend of Larry. Three of the best friends that anyone could ever have are Kermit (Patty) Jackson, Donna Farley, and Glenn Droessler; they would do, and did do, almost anything for Larry, and he heartily appreciated and loved them for their undying loyalty. Among his other great friends are Bob (Tad) Farley (deceased), Jean Droessler [deceased], Jim and Ann Lanser, Don and Lois Lent, Joe Lent, Mike Tighe, and many others. Included among Larrys other dearest friends are his family, who loved him deeply and will miss him terribly, continued... |
