Obituary: Ila Ruth Payne, 85, of LaGrange died , 24, 2010 at Twin Fountains . Mrs. Payne was born 12, 1925 in LaGrange, GA, daughter of the late Robert Thompson and Mollie Walker Thompson. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was a member of Welcome Baptist Church. Mrs. Payne was employed with Solomons Department Store and was a volunteer with West Georgia as a senior companion. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Emmett Payne. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Marsha Payne; one granddaughter, Emily Payne; two grandsons, Joshua Payne and Dylan Payne; one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Gene Prickett, all of LaGrange; one sister-in-law, Shirley Thompson of Opelika, AL; and several nieces and nephews. services will be held 11:00 A.M. , 26, 2010 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Brandon Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in Hillview East . Obituary: Gloria A. Payne, age 79, of Macon, Ga., passed from this life into eternity, on 26, 2015. She spent her childhood from age 10, at Macon's Masonic of Georgia. It was during her high school years at the Masonic that she began her love of tennis. Graduating from Florida State University in 1958, Gloria soon began a career of teaching college P.E. and coaching tennis at Mercer University, Georgia , and Macon . Gloria retired from teaching in the university system in 1994. At age 29, Gloria won the first of four Georgia State Opens during an era when women's tournaments attracted large crowds. From there, she began to dominate Georgia's women's tennis. Her accomplishments in the game of tennis are almost too many to list. Possibly the top five would be, Georgia female player of the year (1978), Southern professional player of the year (1978), Macon Athletic Hall of Fame (1977), being one of 35 finalists for the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. And Gloria's most recent achievement, was her induction in the Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame, May of 2011. Gloria's retirement from teaching, and playing tennis, she continued to enjoy a very full life. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon. Her photography talent brought her many award ribbons and she used that talent to bless many people. Gloria served her community as a site director for PALS, Peers Advocating Leadership & Service, for many years. Gloria leaves behind a brother, William J. Payne, Jr. of Savannah, GA., and a sister, Betty L. Howe, of Woodstock, GA. She was also known as 'Aunt Gloria'. A very special role that she excelled in for three generations, to 19 nieces and nephews. To all of Gloria's many friends, the family would like to say, Thank you!. She considered you her family also, she loved you all! A Memorial Service to celebrate Gloria's life is planned for , 6, 2016, 2:00pm at First Baptist Church of Christ, 511 High Place, Macon, GA. There will be a reception following, to greet the family, and share memories. Obituary: Sergeant First Class Elkay Alwyn Payne entered into rest on , 12, 2017. Sergeant First Class Payne was retired after serving 22 years in the United States Army. He was an avid Indianapolis Colts fan. Mr. Payne was a loving, husband, son, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. Mr. Payne is preceded in death by his grandmothers, Evelyn Tucker and Eartha y. Obituary: Evelyn Caroline Yates Payne, 85 of St. Simons Island passed away on , 13, 2011 at Hospice of the Golden Isles. Memorial Services will be held , 5, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons with visitation one hour prior to service. Evelyn was born 8, 1925 in Junius, New York to the late Charles D. Yates and Margaret M. Taylor. She served as a Sergeant in the WAACS of the U.S. Army during WWII. an honorary discharge from the service, she returned to upstate New York where she worked in the offices of Bloomer Brothers, and then Xerox. Later, and until retirement, she became co-owner and operator of Glynco Machine and Tool Co. in Brunswick, Ga. As a resident of St. Simons Island for the past 37 years, she was active at St. Davids Episcopal Church, an Emeritus member PM of Neptune Chapter # 153 Order of The Eastern Star, past WHP of Bethlehem now affiliated with Palestine Shrine # 8 White Shrine of Jerusalem, member of The Masonic Ladies Auxiliary Golden Isles Lodge # 707, and spent many years in charge of scheduling for the Salvation Army kettle campaigns. Her kindness and generosity was evident and unending. Evie was an aspiring artist and an avid cat lover. She also enjoyed bird watching, gardening, and reading and writing poetry. She was a rescuer of all abandoned animals who were fortunate enough to find their way to her doorstep. Her compassion was infinite. Mrs. Payne is survived by her husband of 39 years, Paul R. Payne, Sr. of St. Simons Island, daughters Donna (and Dayton) Wilson and Linda (and Mike) Rudd, a brother Gilbert Yates and sisters Helen (and Clark) Dingman and Dorothy Meyers. She is also survived by her step-son Paul R. Payne Jr. (and Sharon), step-daughters Darlene (and Paul) Kaminski, Elizabeth (and Richard) Holmes and Susan Walsh. Being blessed with many grandchildren and oodles of great grandchildren brought her great joy; as did her attention and affection bring joy to all of them. She was the heart and core of our family and will be sorely missed.
