Obituary: Margaret LaVerne Powers died on 23, 2010 after an extended convalescence. She was the middle daughter born to Frank P. and Delia Goulet Powers in Minneapolis Minnesota on 25, 1925. She grew up in Mora, Minnesota where she graduated from Mora High school. She attended St. Catherines and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1946 with a bachelors degree in business administration. She worked a myriad of positions at her fathers business, the Kanebec State Bank. Mora could not contain her adventuresome spirit any longer than six years, and she headed West to San Francisco. There she found work at an accounting firm and a brewery. During her time on the west coast, she grew restless again and took a solo, year-long world tour in 1958. She loved it all but had a special place in her heart for India. Her love of adventure, meeting new people and experiencing different cultures remained a common theme in her life. She later traveled with her friends and family to Europe, Ireland, and Egypt as well as exploring her family roots in Prince Edward Island. She joined Mutual of New York (MONY) and here too her career had her on the move. During her work with MONY, she lived in Columbus Ohio, Minneapolis, MN, New York City, and Atlanta Georgia. New York City was her favorite and it was there she learned to walk and talk very fast. She took an early retirement in 1982 to care for her mother and made her home in Lake Park, Florida. Here she developed many strong friendships through her wide variety of interests and activities. She was an avid golfer, bridge player, and long time volunteer as a docent at the Flagler Museum. Her love of history and her knowledge of Floridas past impressed many visitors to the museum. She also enjoyed games of chance, and of course winning, therefore it is not surprising that she also volunteered at the Palm Beach Princess Casino. Marge also helped the efforts to preserve the Loggerhead Turtles on Singer Island and volunteered at PGA tournaments. She was a generous hostess and enjoyed entertaining in her home. The main stronghold throughout her life, was her faith. She was a long standing member of St. Clares Church and fervently believed in the power of prayer. She attended Mass daily at either St. Clares, St. Francis of Assisi, or Our Lady of Florida Spiritual . Each congregation provided her with strength and fellowship. Her life set a wonderful example and inspiration to her family and friends. She accomplished many firsts for a woman in her era, graduating from a major university, building a career, and traveling around the world on her own. She was a sharp, gracious, caring individual with a wonderful kind sense of humor. Her laugh and smile were infectious and will be remembered fondly. She will be sorely missed by her friends and family. Her friends near and far were a great support for her during her convalescence. Their calls, cards, and visits meant the world to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank P. and Delia Goulet Powers, her sisters, Eleanor Klatt and Joyce Krafft. She is mourned by her thirteen nieces and nephews: Michele MacKinnon of Santa Rosa, CA, David Klatt of China, Jacqueline Long of Windsor, CA, Mary Saar of Occidental, CA, Kevin Klatt of Vallejo, CA, Theresa Burleigh of Chico, CA, Jon Klatt of Corvallis, OR, Ann Buettner of Gladewater, TX, Kathleen Krafft of Fenwick Island, DE, Margaret Krafft of Gurnee, IL, Christine Krafft of Ocala, FL, James Krafft of St. Joseph, MI, and Jeannie Kanaby of Edwardsburg, MI; and her brother in law, Gary Klatt of Santa Rosa, CA. Donations may be made in her honor to: St. Clares Church or St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 A gathering for friends and family will be held at the Howard- Price , 754 US Hwy 1, North Palm Beach, FL, on 12/2 from 2-4 pm. A funeral mass will be held 12/3 at 11 am at St. Clares Church, 821 Prosperity Farms Rd., North Palm Beach, FL 33408. A service is being planned in Mora, Minnesota at St. Marys Church, 201 E. Forest Ave. Her final resting place will be in St. Marys . |
