Obituary: Dr. Omer A. Poirier, 83, of West Palm Beach, formerly of Massena, NY, passed away on 3, 2015 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife Isabella, sons Omer (Heather) and Douglas (Lynne), daughter Suzanne Cabrera (Maurice), grandchildren Andrew, Matthew, Alexander, Rachel, his sister Pauline Cook (Doug), brother-in-law Dalton Foster (Nancy) and 6 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by granddaughter Allison.Dr. Poirier was born in Massena, NY on 16, 1931. He attended Massena Central High School where he was a standout in football and track. He graduated from Syracuse University and the State University of New York of Medicine at Syracuse. He entered the military in 1959 where he served with the 2nd Battle Group, 3rd Infantry in Korea as a Captain. He was awarded a special citation and Army Commendation Ribbon with a metal pendant for outstanding service as a battle group surgeon for significantly reducing the incidence of hemorrhagic fever. briefly practicing in Port Byron, he returned to his hometown of Massena in 1967 where he practiced at the Doctors Clinic and Salmon River for over 35 years. He was board certified in Family Medicine and was also an addiction medicine specialist. During his career he served as president of the St Lawrence Medical Society, Massena Town Officer, Medical Services Director at Rose Hill Treatment for adolescents and school physician for Massena Central Schools and Salmon River Schools. He was on staff at Massena Memorial Hospital where he served in various roles including Chief of Staff. He had a devoted patient following and was well known for delivering thousands of babies in the area, the favorite part of his practice. He moved to West Palm Beach, Florida in 1995, where he promptly took and passed the Florida Medical Boards and began a fulltime position with Tenent Systems working in an outpatient clinic and serving as the Medical Review Officer. In 2007 he finally retired and took on the fulltime job as doting husband, father and grandfather and was a fixture at all his grandchildren's school and sporting events. A private graveside burial will be held in the VA in Palm Beach . A celebration of his life will be held in Massena in where all friends and former patients will be invited. Obituary: Gail Annette Poirier, 77, of Palm Harbor passed away peacefully on 21, 2015. She was born 15, 1938, in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Annie (Payne) and Gaylord Behrens. She graduated from Montevideo Central High School in 1956. On 17, 1957, she married the love of her life, Curtis Raymond Poirier. Their fifty-eight year marriage was an inspiration to all who knew them. Three children were born from this union; Mark, Steve, and Beth. Curt and Gail purchased “The Montevideo Reminder” from Curt’s brother George (Stuart) in 1959. were proud members of the Montevideo community and Gail’s involvements included the United Methodist Church and Eastern Star. owned and operated “The Montevideo Reminder” until they semi-retired to Florida in 1985. Curt and Gail have spent the last 30 years in Florida in which they became active members of the community. owned and operated La Rue Reprints and Gallery 2 Custom Framing. are longtime, active members of the North Bay Community Church in Palm Harbor. Gail was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering on the Tampa Bay Rays and Buccaneers. Gail is survived by her loving husband, Curtis Poirier of Palm Harbor; son, Mark Poirier of Montevideo, MN; son, Steve Poirier (Cheryl) of West Fargo, ND; daughter, Beth Boesch (Gary) of Belleair, FL; sister Barbara (Bill) Koske of Clearwater, FL; brother, Lee Behrens of Montevideo, MN; grandson, Brandon Gaugler (Teresa) of West Fargo, ND; granddaughter, Kristine (Timothy) Zilliox of Mount Pleasant, WI; grandson, Kyle Poirier of West Fargo, ND; grandson, Austyn Poirier of West Fargo, ND; great-grandsons Luke and Dylan Gaugler; great-granddaughter, Marina Zilliox; nieces, Teri Bernard and Sue (Nestor) Aguilar. She was preceded in death by her parents. Gail will be greatly missed by her family and friends; she loved her family so much and always thought of them and others first. Gail’s strong Christian faith brings comfort to the family during this time as they know God is blessing her in her eternal life. Sylvan Abbey in Clearwater is handling a family memorial and cremation; the church service will be at a later date when Curt’s health allows him to join. |
