Obituary: Dr. Jerald Henry Pietan, known as Jerry, was born 2, 1941, in Minneapolis, MN and died in Jacksonville, FL on 12, 2015 following a brief illness. His parents, Pearl Michael and Ervin W. Pietan, predeceased him, as did a brother. Survivors include his beloved wife, Mary Fraser Pietan, to whom he was married for 48 years, his daughters Jody Pietan Minner (Michael), Kelly Lynn Pietan and sons Scott Jerald Pietan (Mary-Frances), Mark Walfred Pietan (Angela), grandchildren Cally Minner, Lucy Minner, Thomas Minner and Sebastian Pietan as well as three brothers and a sister. Dr. Pietan graduated from Hamline University, St. Paul MN, earned his Medical Degree at the University of Minnesota, interned in Duluth MN and spent three years in Family Practice in Chisolm, MN. A three-year Residency in Radiology at the Mayo Clinic Rochester and a two year staff appointment was followed by eleven years in private practice as a Radiologist in Madison, WI. In 1987, the Pietan family moved to Atlantic Beach, FL when Jerry began his work at the Mayo Clinic Florida in Jacksonville. He served as Chairman of the Radiology Dept. there from 1999 through 2006 and continued with Mayo until his death. His presence was both encouraging and comforting to all who knew him. Jerry constantly expressed his belief in facing lifes challenges with solutions rather than resignation. He was an inspiration to countless grateful people and he will be enormously missed. A smile was his trademark. Jerry was surrounded and admired by family, friends and colleagues. His expertise and accomplishments as a physician were matched by his concern for and commitment to his patients. The practice of medicine was natural in his capable and loving hands and his sunny disposition, sense of humor and wonder were constantly present. He thoroughly enjoyed life on the coast of North Florida and at a retreat in the mountains of North Carolina. A Celebration of Jerrys Life will be held at Hardage-Giddens 1701 Beach Blvd. Jacksonville Beach on , 21, 2015. Visiting with the family at 11 AM will be followed by a Service at 12 noon. Participating in the creation and implementation of the Mayo Clinic Florida Humanities in Medicine Program, which brings art and music to patients, was Jerrys passion.
