Obituary: Katherine Gilbert Phifer 7, 1937 – 2, 2015 Katherine (Kate) Gilbert Phifer passed away peacefully into the arms of her Heavenly Father at the age of seventy-seven on 2nd 2015, in Clearwater, Florida. She was surrounded by family in her final days as she passed away from complications with Alzheimer’s disease. Kate was born on 7, 1937 to Leonard and Catherine Gilbert in Evanston, Illinois, where she spent her childhood years. She graduated from North Shore Country Day School in 1954 and later attended Denison University, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She completed her BA in English at Rockford . Her marriage to Jerry Jewell in 1957 brought the joy of her two daughters, Sarah and Linda. She married Arden Phifer in 1972, celebrating forty-two years of loving marriage in of last year. Kate pursued a career as a writer, researcher, and editor, which culminated in her authorship of three non-fiction books as well as many articles and essays. One of her greatest joys in life was being actively involved in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed her leadership roles on the Board of Directors for Dairymen’s Country Club, with Pi Beta Phi sorority, and with Community Bible Study. Her other passions included quilting and knitting, outdoor activities such as canoeing and golf, nature walks, studying family history, international travel, attending horse races, musical theatre, and reading. Kate’s primary places of residence included Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the Tampa Bay area in Florida. She is survived by her husband, Arden Phifer; her sister, Gail Weislogel (Lou); her brother, Richard Gilbert (Karen); her lifelong friend, Ann Arries; her daughters, Sarah Frank (Jay) and Linda Spence (Keith); her step-daughters, Jamee Tuttle and Kate Geiser; her ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. will remember her for her deep love for her family, her wise and encouraging words, and her unwavering faith in the Lord through all circumstances. A funeral service will be held on , 5th, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, Florida. A reception will follow at Regency Oaks South Lobby in Clearwater, Florida at 3:30 PM. McPherson, Silva, NC; and Karen McPherson, (deceased), State , PA; Heather Green Kreider (Keith), Orlando, FL; Jonathan (J.J) Green, St Petersburg, FL; Jennifer MacPherson Stelzer, (Matt) San Diego, CA; Robert A. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Shelby, (Bowling), Savannah, Kira McPherson,(deceased) and Danielle McPherson; Alex and Parker Kreider; Dylan Stelzer, and one great, great grandchild, Jackson Bowling. Maisie earned her Bachelors degree after attending The of William and Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University, graduating in 1969. She began her teaching career in Warrenton, Virginia at Central Elementary where she also served on the Board of Directors of the Warrenton Antique Show for many years. She was well-loved and admired by her students, teachers, and administrators as evidenced with a special plaque presented to her on her retirement stating You have been one of the schools outstanding assets.There are very few master teachers in a school system much less in an individual school. In having you, Central has one of those rare individuals. Your competency, your creativity, your concentration on your tasks, and your success in accomplishing your objectives result in a classroom performance that is one for others to emulate. In short, you are an outstanding teacher whom it is a privilege to have on our staff. She was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. When asked what was her secret in living a long, healthy life she responded do everything in moderation and always do what you truly love doing. Mary was actively involved with her church, The Church of the Isles, Indian Rocks Beach, FL where she participated in the Mary & Martha sewing group. She enjoyed luncheons with the Red Hat Society, was active in the Belleair Beach Garden Club, and loved swimming as her form of daily exercise. retirement, Maisie discovered a talent for painting that she embraced with creating beautiful landscapes and Florida sea birds. She and her husband traveled extensively all over the world. With her family, she celebrated her 95th birthday on a cruise to the Caribbean. Maisie and her son, Bob and Veronica traveled to Ireland to celebrate her 97th birthday and she did exclaim it was one of her most memorable events. Her favorite destination was Hawaii that she visited many times. She enjoyed reading with a passion and completing her daily cryptoquotes on her beloved computer, which she was still solving after reaching her 101st birthday. Maisie was a woman of strength, honor and dignity with unwavering, unconditional, and limitless love for her children and grandchildren.she was truly the Matriarch of the McPherson Clan.
