Obituary: Susan Lou (Knudtson) OReilly Susan Lou OReilly, age 65, died peacefully on 13, 2014 surrounded by her family at home in Springfield, Virginia after a struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease. Susan (Sue) was born 16, 1948 in Albert Lea, Minnesota to Robert L. Knudtson and Annarita H. Lehmann. She was the 4th of 9 children. A graduate of White Bear High School in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, she joined the Air Force in 1967, shortly after her Mothers death. She was a medical technician and cared for patients in the Emergency Room. She was on active duty for five years and progressed quickly in rank. She met her husband, Dennis, in 1970 shortly after he arrived at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California. Although she outranked him at the time, they started dating. Within three weeks they were engaged. When they married on 18, 1971 it was the beginning of a happy life together as husband-and-wife. Military policy at the time precluded pregnant females from remaining on active duty. Sue separated from the Air Force in 1972 as a Staff Sergeant (E-5). the birth of their first child in 1972, she settled into the full-time role of Wife and Mother to a family that eventually grew to include four wonderful children. Dennis made the Air Force a career, and the family was able to accompany him on all of his assignments in the United States and Europe, including a six-year stint in Germany, cultivating everlasting memories and friendships. Susan bucked the system by being a stay-at-home Mom and domestic goddess during the height of the Womens Lib movement and afterward. She was unashamed of having homemade cookies and milk waiting for the kids when they got home from school, and played a very active role in their upbringing as caring, patriotic, and upstanding citizens. Once her children were in high school, Sue went back to the work force. She spent a few years working at a local dry cleaner before accepting a position as an Administrative Assistant at the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority Headquarters in Fairfax Station, Virginia. There, she formed many new friendships with co-workers and management staff, and leaves a legacy in the form of an intricate and detailed filing system which was sorely needed when she arrived. Politics at all levels were important to Sue, a staunch Conservative. She was always happy to discuss and share her views on current world events or politics on the Hill and in the White House, but would never push her views on anyone. She never let disagreeing views affect her love and respect for anyone. She had a strong religious faith. A convert from Lutheranism to Catholicism shortly before marriage, she placed her faith in God and routinely prayed for others whom she felt were in need of it, including Liberals and her children, especially in their teenage years. Susan was an avid reader and artist. Dog-eared novels and art books were a common sight in just about any room of her home. In recent years, a Kindle was her constant companion. In her artwork, she dabbled in pencil, ink, pastel and oil mediums, but in the last few years she focused almost exclusively on watercolor. She soaked up new methods for the creation of her artwork and shared her love of drawing and painting and technique with her children and grandchildren. Susan was predeceased by her sister Rebecca Becky Spinks and brother David. She is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, Dennis; her children, John (Robin) OReilly, Kathleen (Kirk) Madsen, Brendan (Morgan) OReilly and Laura McDowell; her grandchildren, Brittany, Lindsey, Levi, Annarita, Lauryn and Lacey; her siblings, Mary (Don) Johnson, Roberta Berta (Bob) Jones, Steven Steve (Deb) Knudtson, Marcia (Tim) Ross, Mark (Robbin) Knudtson, and Patricia Pat (Bob) Pichotta; her brother-in-law Donald Don Spinks; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on evening from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Demaine , 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, Virginia 22151, with recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 pm. A Mass will be celebrated on at 11:00 am at St. Raymond of Peñafort Church, 8750 Pohick Road, Springfield, Virginia 22153. A reception will be held at the family home following the Mass, 7614 Chancellor Way, Springfield, VA 22153. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the ALS Association (http://www.alsa.org/donate/) in her name would be gratefully appreciated. |

Obituary: The Reverend Gene Brown O’Quinn, 87 died peacefully at Vista Park Memory in Petersburg, Virginia on 16, 2015. He was born in Jefferson , Alabama 17, 1928 the youngest of nine children born to the union of Thomas Osborn O’Quinn and Margaret Brown O’Quinn. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Thelma Irene McCarty O’Quinn. He is also survived by his youngest son, the Reverend Doctor James Gordon (Jim) O’Quinn and Jim’s wife the Reverend Doctor Dorothy McNeer O’Quinn and their three sons Blair Christian O’Quinn, Payne Carter O’Quinn and Vaughn Cameron O’Quinn. His last surviving sibling, Samuel Allen (Sam) O’Quinn lives in Warner Robins, Georgia. Following the death of Brown and Thelma’s oldest son, Robert Edward (Bob) O’Quinn in 2001, he moved to Chesterfield, Virginia. Brown, as he was known by friends, was shaped by the death of his father (Big Daddy) in 1938. Along with brothers and sisters, he helped provide for his mother (Big Mama) until she died in 1965. He worked shining shoes, carrying newspapers, and later in grocery stores to keep food on the family table. The depression and World War II were difficult times for his family. He graduated from Jones Valley High School in 1946. Brookhaven Methodist Church which was located in Powderly, Alabama helped him become receptive to a call to pastoral ministry. He was licensed to preach in 1951. He attended Birmingham-Southern (class of 1955) and Candler School of Theology, Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (1958). He was an ordained Elder in the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was appointed to serve churches from 1951 until his retirement in 1990. Counting his appointment to circuits of churches, Reverend O’Quinn served twenty-five congregations as their minister. In 1957, he was named “Pastor of the Year” for the North Alabama Conference as a second-year seminarian serving five rural Churches with five building programs going on at the same time. moving to Virginia, he became an affiliate member of the Virginia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. It was Reverend O’Quinn’s passion to mentor men and women called to ministry. He wanted new ministers to have the foundational resources to be good preachers. He gifted aspiring ministers with his experiences in ministry as well as sets of The Interpreter’s Bible Commentary and provided them with a scholarly translation of the Bible and The United Methodist Book of Worship. He quietly solicited money from family and friends, offering to pay half the cost for his latest “new minister” project. In retirement, he volunteered at the University of Alabama and during Desert Storm worked at the VA Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He served as a pastor in four additional appointments after his formal retirement including three located in Virginia. His call to ministry remained strong throughout his life. Even as his mind was lost to Alzheimer’s disease, Reverend O’Quinn imagined he was starting a new Church or he had to rush to “help somebody” nearby. Accomplishments, community service, education, religion, and virtue were important to him. He enjoyed classical music and opera. His theology was “social-gospel” and he possessed a strong personal desire to live ethically and righteously. Brown O’Quinn was a man who held his own opinion securely. He would stand his ground refusing to compromise even at the cost of church, family, personal, or public opinion. He was a good man, but like all, he was imperfect in life. Gene Brown O’Quinn has been made perfect through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Memorial Services with communion for family and friends will be May 1st at 2:00 PM at Elmwood Chapel with The Reverend Rick Owen officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Interment of ashes will follow in Elmwood . In lieu of flowers memorial for Brown O’Quinn may be made to The West Dinwiddie Charge, “Build a House for Haiti” Project and sent to P.O. Box 6 Church Road, Virginia 23833 or to the Faison School for Autism, Development Fund 1701 Byrd Avenue, Richmond, VA 23230. |
