Obituary: John G. Olson On 27, 1917, a little “blue baby†boy was born with only half a heart. We don’t know what pumped his blood for the next 92 years, but considering all the goodness and love he exhibited to those around him and all the fun he had throughout his life, he didn’t really need more of a heart anyway. John Glade Olson was born in Fairview, Utah, the seventh child of Christian Peter and Maud Maria Anderson Olson. He and his “twin†brother Rees grew up in Fairview and Payson as a part of a strong, loving family. He learned to have fun from his Scottish mother and developed his work ethic after the death of his father when John was only fourteen. graduating from Payson High School in 1937, where he was drum major for the band, he served an LDS mission in Sweden for eleven months until World War II broke out and Europe was closed to the missionaries. He finished his mission in the Central States Mission in Kansas. Upon returning home, he joined the Utah National Guard, serving in the Pacific during the war. He later said that he didn’t feel like a true veteran because he and his meteorology unit had “so much fun†on their adventures. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army with the rank of staff sergeant. the war, he met and fell in love with Edith Elizabeth Johnson from Benjamin, Utah. married in the Salt Lake Temple on 28, 1946. Over the next 14 years, six darling daughters were born to this union, and he proved to be the best daddy ever. John graduated from BYU with a degree in Biology in 1949, they moved to Mink Creek, Idaho, where he began his teaching career. He taught at the elementary school there, and then acted as principal of the same school before teaching Biology at Preston High School. Edith died, he married Cleo Lundstrom Griffin in the Logan Temple on 12, 1972. He also enjoyed being stepfather to her five children and grandfather to many. John often said that he wasn’t having fun unless he was working. He was always so busy that it’s hard to mention all his accomplishments. Over the years, he used his talents as a carpenter to build four different houses for his family and worked on almost every house in mink Creek and surrounding areas. He loved to garden and was famous for landscaping with thousands of beautiful flowers as well as growing strawberries, kohlrabi, gooseberries, and asparagus. He bought and ran the small country store in Mink Creek for a number of years. He loved the gospel and served in several LDS bishoprics and a number of different callings with the youth. The Scout camps he organized were legendary. He and his family were custodians for the Mink Creek meetinghouse and the cemetery for years. retirement, he and Cleo worked at the Family History , doing extractions. also took up quilting, John being actively involved in all aspects of the process. John kept track of every quilt he worked on, and his tally was well over 700 by the time of his death. Everywhere he went and everything he did touched many lives. In 1994, John and Cleo moved to Payson to be closer to family. Cleo passed away in 2004, John’s heart was always open to extended family. Even in his later years, when his health faltered and him mind grew dim, John’s sweet spirit made him a favorite at Cambry House and Mountain Air Assisted Living. He passed away peacefully of pneumonia on , 22, 2009, surrounded by loved one on both sides of the veil. John is survived by his six daughters: Mary (Bob) Carter of Payson, Karen (Keith) Tribett of Elk Ridge, Nancy Puente Olson of Magna, Margaret (Bill) Wright of Payson, Janet Bergera of Payson, and Emily (Brandon) Johnson of Moab; stepchildren Doug (Terry) Griffin of Kanab, Paul (Sylvia) Griffin of Boerne, Texas, Brent (Pat) Griffin of Provo, Bob (Jan) Griffin of Austin, Texas, and Janis (Gregg) Davis of Phoenix; 43 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, both of his wives, four sisters, three brothers, and one seeing eye frog (note to newspaper people. . . yes, frog, not dog). arrangements are being made by Walker Mortuary of Payson. A viewing will be held there , 25, 2009, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held , 26, 2009, at noon at the Payson 1st Ward, 225 S. 400 W. A viewing will be held that morning from 10:45 am to 11:45 am prior to the service. Interment will be in the Payson City with Military Rites accorded by the American Legion, Dist. #4. The family would like to extend special thanks to all who helped with the care of John over the past year: Dr. Bret Chipman, Dr. John Black, Alpine (especially his nurse Joyce), staff members from the Dambry House and Mountain Air Assisted Living, nurses at both UVRMC in Provo and Mountain View Hospital in Payson. And a super special thanks to Bob Carter who visited John several times a day for many months. Grandpa, we love you!!! |

Obituary: Helen Elizabeth Nelson Olson, 81, of Spanish Fork died , 21, 2008 at her home. She was born on 2, 1927 in Spring Canyon, Carbon , Utah, the daughter of Oliver Willard and Ferrel Blackett Nelson. Mom grew up in Springville and Spanish Fork, spending many summers on The Ranch at Wanrhodes up Diamond Fork Canyon. Helen graduated from Spanish Fork High School. Her brother Leon, was killed in the Bataan Death during WWII. In 1943, when she was 16, her father died in a mining accident after which she helped raise her two younger siblings. She married Gilbert Hjlmar Olson on 8, 1947 in Ely, Nevada. She was the mother of five children. One, Lois Ann, passed away as a young child. Helen was a leader in the community. She was president of many organizations including The Rotary Club, The Chamber of Commerce, and the DUP. She was active in the LDS church, holding many positions, especially enjoying her work with the Young Women Certification program. She was a great cook, loved the garden and flowers, spending time with her family at the cabin, and family reunions. Helen worked at many jobs over the years, including the Del Monte Cannery, Olsons Greenhouse; and the Petal Pantry. Along with her daughter Karen, she opened and operated Artistic Floral for 16 years. Survivors include one son, Leon (Susan) Olson; and three daughters, (Gary) Dutton; Kaye (Mark) Bailey; and Karen Olson; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Wendall (Arlene) Nelson; and one sister, Marie (John) Waters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert; and her daughter, Lois Ann; a sister, Louise (Fred) Atwood (Bud) Hales; two brothers, Leon Willard Nelson; and William James (Jean) Nelson. services will be held on , 26, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Old 1st and 12th Ward Chapel, 310 East Street, Spanish Fork. Friends may call at Walker Mortuary, 187 S. Main Street, Spanish Fork on evening, 25, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. or morning at the church from 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. prior to services.
