Obituary: Gus H. Orsborn of San Antonio died on Nov. 7, 2001 at age 81. Orsborn was a proud veteran of the U. S. Army who served his country in World War II and the Korean War. A Dallas native born on Sept. 13, 1920, Orsborn enlisted on Sept. 1, 1938 and saw combat action in the European Theater in World War II while serving as a rifleman and squad leader with F of the 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Division. He fought with the 121st, which is also known as the ÂGray Bonnet regiment, in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland and was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star. Orsborn never forgot the sacrifice of his comrades who died on the battlefields of Europe, including the many men who lost their lives while fighting among the hedgerows of Normandy in the summer of 1944. Orsborn met his wife, Frances Medaglia of Beaver Falls, PA., in 1946 at an army hospital in El Paso, where he was recovering from a bullet wound to his right leg received Feb. 26, 1945 in an early morning attack on the German town of Eschweiler. Frances was a nurseÂs aid in the WomenÂs Army Corps when they met. The couple married on 6, 1946 in El Paso. During the Korean War, Orsborn served at a hospital in Tokyo as a physical therapistÂs assistant. He was a Master Sergeant when he received an honorable discharge in 1964. leaving the service, Orsborn worked as a barber in San Antonio until retiring in 1982. He loved his family and his country and was honored to have served it in peacetime and war. Orsborn suffered a heart attack on Nov. 6 and died at Northeast Baptist Hospital on Nov. 7 surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Frances; children, Linda Davidson, Mary F. Orsborn and her companion, Jorge Servin, John L. Orsborn and his wife Rose Martinez-Orsborn, Barbara A. Grewe and her husband, Toby L. Grewe, and Thomas W. Orsborn and his wife Beth Ann Becker-Orsborn; grandchildren, Paul J. Orsborn, David J. Orsborn, Christine E. Orsborn and Kristopher S. Grewe; sister, Mary Alice Weaver and several nieces and nephews. Vera liked to go crabbing and taking care of stray animals. Vera was a people person, a loving wife and mother. She loved to care for her children and husband. She enjoyed going dancing when she was younger. She liked to take care of her house plants and doing yardwork. Vera liked the San Antonio Spurs, and loved the Dallas Cowboys. Vera was a die hard Cowboys fan, and could be found wearing the Cowboys Jersey on game day.
