For more than 60 years, Olive was a loyal and dedicated member of Parrish First Baptist Church, where she enjoyed fellowship and serving with friends and family. Mom and Dad made sure their six boys were raised in the faith and set the example of the importance of church and family first. She was particularly fond of any music program performed at First Baptist. Quilting was a special hobby of hers, which she enjoyed with some of her closest friends. As lunchroom manager for the Parrish School System for 25 years, Mom was known for her Southern-style cooking, coveted by all who graced the lunchrooms. She could whip up 100 biscuits like it was nothing. Another hobby of Mom’s was gardening. Violets were her specialty and recently it was orchids. The most important things in Mom’s life were God and family. The legacy she and Dad left is a testimony that they loved and enjoyed all their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren above and beyond. She was always there to lend a helping hand and to be that shoulder to lean upon. On many occasions she hosted family parties and meals teaching all of us the true meaning of love. She was the glue that held us all together. She will be deeply missed by her entire family. Mom, we send you home on the wings of angels, with our blessings and eternal love! |

She is survived by her sister Rachel (Leo) Sweatte, her brother Alton (Shirley) Dunbar, her four children Robert (Martha) Olive, Clyde Olive, Norma (Larry) Shoultz, and Annette Mills, also her grandchildren Andrea (Jim) Moneymaker, Valerie (Frank) Reid, Tracie Olive, David ( ) Olive, Franklin (Laura) Olive, Michael Shoultz, Scott (Shannon) Shoultz, Mary Lauren Mills, Melissa Mills, Norma Mills, and Nina Mills, her great-grandchildren Sarah Reid, Samantha Reid, Taylor Buchanan, Lindsey Olive, Ben Olive, Erin Olive, Tyler Olive, Ella Olive, Cody Shoultz, and Cooper Shoultz as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Mrs. Olive was born in Bath, N.C. She was the second of six children and grew up during the Depression years in Pinetown, N.C. There was a lot of work to be done in such a large family, and she learned at a young age to be very responsible. She also loved to play ball with her brothers and sister, and her favorite Christmas memory was pushing everyone around in the red, Radio-Flyer wagon that they all shared as their Christmas present one year. She graduated salutatorian of her small high school class, and because of her shy personality was very glad that she did not make valedictorian and have to give a speech. high school, she met a handsome, young sailor who courted her, married her, and took her back to his parents antebellum home in Brantley, Alabama. She lived there for several years with her parents-in-law, and throughout her life, she loved them as her own parents and was grateful for all that they did. finding work with Southern Bell Telephone , Durward moved her to Mobile where they made life-long friends and raised their children. Mrs. Olives best friend was Gertrude Flowers, and they shared many memories together. Mrs. Olive was a person of patience and unwavering faith in God. She always looked for the best in people, and truthfully her children cannot remember her gossiping about anyone ever. Cooking was her great talent. She poured her whole self into her meals and never took shortcuts. To this day, no one has equaled her chicken and rice, chocolate chip cookies, pound cakes, and carrot cakes. She worked diligently all her life but did not like to be in the limelight. She faithfully attended Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile and served in the kitchen for over twenty years. She also was a faithful nursery worker. moving to Cullman in 1998 to be closer to her grandchildren, she joined Trinity Baptist Church and attended as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Olive was an avid Braves fan and enjoyed watching the games becoming quite attached to many of the players-always sad to see them traded to another team. Although her family is split between Auburn and Alabama football, she supported both teams, leaning a little more toward Auburn when the two played but never quite admitting it. She loved to watch her grandchildren play sports from football to basketball to baseball. She made it to every dance recital and special program that she possibly could. Her family was her life, and she was a person who thoroughly enjoyed most every day that she lived. Mrs. Olives name, Edna Erle, was the name of a character in a book that her mother had read and liked so much. She never did know the name of the book, but this Edna Erle wrote her own book through the life that she lived and the people that she loved. A special thank you to caregivers Joan Martin and Lora Hastings. Also, thank you to the Folsom second floor nurses, therapists, and aides who helped take care of Mrs. Olive in her last days. |
