Obituary: Hazel L. Odom 16, 1933 \ 12, 2014 Hazel L. Odom, 81, of Phenix City, Alabama was born in Carnegie, Georgia on 16, 1933. She entered Heavens gates on , 12, 2014, being held in the loving embrace of her precious daughter, at the Columbus Hospice House. services will be held at 2:00 P.M. 14, 2014, Striffler Hamby Mortuary, Phenix City Chapel with her son-in-law, Doug Broadwater officiating. Private interment will be a Lakeview Memory Gardens. Active pall bearers include Doug Broadwater, Rodney Odom, Robert Odom, Darrell Odom, Bo Broadwater and Brad Funderburk. The family will receive friends evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. Sarah Emma Hazel Lindsey Odom was raised in Columbus, Georgia, the daughter of the late r L. Lindsey and Lucille McKinnon Lindsey. She united in marriage to Perry L. Odom on May 28, 1949 in Columbus, Georgia. He preceded her in death 31, 2005. were married 56 wonderful years. Mrs. Odom was also preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Rebecca Renee George of Columbus, Georgia, and her sister Francis Dorman, Opelika, Alabama. There is no doubt of a loud and joyful reunion happening in heaven. Mrs. Odom was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She was everyones Grandmama and loved everyone with open arms. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. No one would leave her house hungry. She was such a generous person. She loved to watch food and cooking channels. Mrs. Odom was an avid reader and she loved mysteries and The Gone With The Wind. Mrs. Odom had an unwavering faith in God. She was also a talented singer and former member of a gospel quartet that loved to sing hymns of praise for everyone to hear. She passed her musical talents and love of gospel music on to her children and grandchildren. During her passing her daughter was singing the beautiful hymns that Mrs. Odom loved and had taught her and great peace was among her. Mrs. Odom received her degree from The Medical School of in 1964. She was in the last graduating class from the school. Mrs. Odom scored the second highest on her nursing boards in the entire state of Georgia. She worked as charge nurse at The Medical . She was part of the nursing team that opened Doctors Hospital. She also worked as a private duty nurse in Phenix City for many years. She was a nurse until the day she died and was passionate and cared greatly for others. She is survived by her children and their spouses; Rodney and Jane Odom, Richland, Georgia; Robert Odom, Phenix City, Alabama and Ronda and Doug Broadwater, Phenix City, Alabama; Grandchildren and spouses; Tamatha and Gene Shumate, Teresa and Tim Owenby, Bubba and Nita Richards, Darrell and Sally Odom, Kim and Chad Norton, Chad Patterson, Corey Odom, Derek Odom, Christi and Brad Funderburk, Bo and DaLin Broadwater; Great-grandchildren; Brandi Strickland, Amanda Spear, Candace Spear, Traci Shumate, Timmy Owenby, Dustin Owenby, Hunter Owenby, Teresa Richards, Trey Richards, Mikie Richards, Jake Sanders, Jordan Sanders, Colby Patterson, Annie Funderburk, and Johnny Funderburk, 7 great-great-grandchildren; also survived by her sister Earline Yerger, Lima, Ohio and brother Harold Lindsey, Columbus, Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephews.
