Obituary: Colonel (Retired) Paul Revere O’Mary, 87, passed this life at Hospice of West Alabama on 2, 2015. Visitation will be , Feb. 6, 2015, from 5 until 7 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa. services will be held , Feb. 7, 2015, at 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church, Dr. Gil McKee and Dr. Rick Lance officiating. Private burial services will follow at New Oak Grove Baptist Church in Nauvoo. Colonel O’Mary was a veteran with over 32 years of Army service. He volunteered for the Army near the end of hostilities in World War II, served in the 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, one of the units to occupy Japan at the end of the war. He became a non-commissioned officer but took a discharge when his term of service expired to attend college, acquire a Regular Army Commission, and re-entered the Army as a career officer. He saw combat as an Infantry officer during the Korean Conflict, being wounded in action on 27 1953 at Kumhwa, North Korea. Following the war, he served three years as an Instructor of Leadership in the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, following which time he served two years in the Third Infantry (President’s Honor Guard) in Washington, D.C., where inter alia he served the nation as Liaison and Protocol Officer during Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev’s extended visit to the United States – a duty that brought him in daily contact with the Soviet leader and the large contingent accompanying him. In l960, he was selected to attend the Command and General Staff , Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. A year later, he would be selected as Operations Officer of the Berlin Brigade, a position in which his responsibilities involving access to West Berlin by air, rail, and autobahn were vital interests of the United States, and on more than one occasion, Soviet challenges to these access rights brought the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of war. At the end of his tour in Berlin, he was selected to attend the Armed Forces Staff in Norfolk, Virginia, followed by an assignment for three years as a career management officer in Infantry Branch in Washington, D. C. From there he served in combat as an Infantry Officer in Vietnam during a period that included the Tet Offensive of 1968. He commanded the lst Battalion (Mechanized), 58th Infantry, and subsequently served four years in the Pentagon with the Army General Staff and Joint Chiefs of Staff. Colonel O’Mary was a graduate of all three of the Army’s selective service schools: The Command and General Staff , Armed Forces Staff , and the Army War . He subsequently earned a Masters Degree from George Washington University, and from 1978 to the present time held the singular distinction as the Honorary Colonel of the 58th Infantry, a proud regiment to which he had previously given the name of “Patriots” during the Vietnam War. He ended his military career as Professor of Military Science at The University of Alabama, building the voluntary Army ROTC program at that institution to the nation’s largest during a period of great anti-military sentiment on the nation’s college campuses. Subsequent to his retirement from the Army in 1978, he served 10 years at the University of Alabama, playing a key role as a Development Officer in that institution’s first major capital campaign and concurrently teaching classes in Human Resource Management at that institution’s of Commerce and Business Administration. Among his many U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations are two awards of the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Parachutist Badge, Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Service Medal, being one of only four officers below General Officer grade to ever receive this high award since its establishment by an act of Congress in 1918. Colonel O’Mary was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa where he served as a School teacher and subsequently as a life deacon. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Jane Marie Murphree O’Mary; two brothers, Henry Lloyd O’Mary and Will T. O’Mary Jr,; and his parents, Will T. O’Mary Sr. and Leona B. O’Mary. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Allean Stewart, Sharon Leigh Casey and Karen Marie Spann; and a sister, Ethel O’Mary Boshell. Pallbearers will be Sonny Falgout, Grady , Rick Gibson, Mark Gurganus, Ron Henry, George Hodgson, Tom Myers and Jerry Thomas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made to the Paul R. and Jane M. O’Mary Distinguished Graduate Fund at the University of Alabama, the Paul R, and Jane M. O’Mary Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of North Alabama, or to the operating budget of First Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa. |
