Obituary: Devon Garry Opalenik, age 19, of Raleigh, passed away suddenly on , 20, 2015 in Colorado. Born in Brick, New Jersey, Devon moved with his family to the Raleigh area at the age of 11. In the more recent years, he spent time living in New Jersey, and also visiting and working with his father in Colorado. Devon was a lover of all animals, especially his faithful companion, Zia. He loved nature and being outdoors and always enjoyed going hiking. Devon also had a love for nice cars and driving fast, driving his BMW M5 everywhere he went. He was even a member of the car club, Underground Royalty where he spent time with other car enthusiasts. Devon truly loved music, especially rap music. He always loved to dress nice, have the nicest sneakers, and make sure his hair was always styled just right. Devon was a very hard worker and had become a talented craftsman, learning many different trades. He also volunteered his time to help clean up in New Jersey after hurricane Sandy. Devon had an amazing heart, was incredibly giving and caring and had a great sense of humor. Devon is survived by his father and step-mother, Keith Opalenik and Colleen Opalenik; mother and step-father, Dawn Lorenzano and Jamie Carr; step-father, Paul Lorenzano; maternal grandfather, Edward Nann and his wife, Renee DeRouen; paternal grandparents, Garry Opalenik and Etta Opalenik; his Nana, Esther Nann and grandma, Sylvia Lorenzano; siblings, Karly Opalenik, Alex Lorenzno, Maria Lorenzano and Kaitlynn Lorenzano; aunts and uncles, Edward and Lia Nann, Casey Nann, Lauren Nann and Jamie Opalenik; as well as a large extended family. Devon was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Grace Silva. A gathering will be held on , 28 from 6:00-9:00pm at Mitchell , 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC. Obituary: Major George Opacic, 95, died 5, 2016 in Morrisville, NC. He was born 15, 1921, in Johnstown, PA. The son of the late Stephen and Katherine Opacic. Preceded in death by sisters, Lucy Smedo, Mildred Gobbels, Millicent Lacko, Dorothy Weaver; and brothers Steve, Michael and Eli. Survived by loving wife of 61 years, Doris (Basler) Opacic, children: George Richard married to Kimeri (Steyer) Opacic, Ralph Steven married to Sherry (Goulden) Opacic, Linda married to Ryan Stevens, sister Angeline Smedo, sister-in-law Dolores (Matan) Opacic and Irma (Medvecky) Opacic, four granddaughters, one grandson, two great-grandsons, two great -granddaughters and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. graduating from high school, George was employed by the Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown, PA. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942. He served in combat zones in the Pacific Theater in World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. In World War II, he served as a Technical Sergeant with the Third Marine Division. While on Guam, after World War II, he was transferred to the Third Amphibious Corps which was deployed to Tientsin, China to accept the surrender of Japanese Troops in Northern China. George served as a Disbursing Officer in combat zones with the First Marine Air Wing in Korea and Japan during the Korean War and in Okinawa and Vietnam during the Vietnam War. In 1961, he was named a George Washington Honor Medal Award winner in the Valley Forge Freedom Awards Program for an Essay he submitted on What I Can Do For Freedom. He retired from the Marine Corps at the rank of Major with over 23 years of service in 1966. George had a second career as a civilian employee in the Navy Department for seventeen years. He was employed at the Navy Security Station and Navy Publication Printing Service as a Budget & Accounting Analyst, and at the Defense Printing Service at the Pentagon as a Comptroller, where he retired as a GS13 in 1983. George and Doris enjoyed participating in and supporting their three children in their many school and after school activities. He umpired Little League games for seven years, managed a Little League Team, was on the Committee of Boy Scout Troop 1123, their Photographer and Merit Badge Counselor. He was a member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers, Military Officer's Association of America, American Legion, AARP and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. George and Doris moved to North Carolina in 2013. a long, happy, full life, he will be remembered as being patriotic, enjoying good friends and neighbors, good times, sports, and music. The family will have a viewing at the Apex on , 17th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. At 6:30 PM we will have a celebration of Georges life with prayers, memories and songs shared. The church service will be held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Raleigh on , 18th at 11:00 AM. Obituary: Barbara Van Oostrum, devoted educator and loving mother and grandmother who never met a stranger, died with both daughters by her side after an extended and brave battle with cancer. She was 68. A Cary resident, she was a Guidance Counselor at Leesville Road Middle School. A native New Yorker, Barbara was known for her energy and dedication to family, students and friends. earning her Montessori Certification in 1980 and starting Montessori Learning in Fort Lauderdale, Barbara went on to earn a BS in 1989 and MS in 1992 from Nova University and an Ed.S. from Barry University in 1994. In her 29 years as an educator and counselor in Florida and North Carolina, she created and/or managed countless programs to better the lives of children and families. She often heard back from those who cited the difference she made in their lives. She volunteered in organizations to prevent child abuse as well as other important causes. Barbara did all this while being a wife and mother, and later reveling in her role as grandmother. Barbara was called Mom and later Grandma well beyond her immediate family. Her holiday meals were renowned, enjoyed by many who were away from their own family. An avid shopper, great cook and wonderful entertainer, Barbara loved to brag about and spoil each of her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by daughters; Lauri Van Oostrum of Cary and Amy Engler and husband, Ray, of Cary; grandchildren, Peter Engler, Zachary Engler, Kayla Engler, and Maya Van Oostrum; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Edward Sherrick, of Connecticut; and 6 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mortimer and Gloria Bossak, and husband Walter Van Oostrum. A service will be held at Apex on , 11 at 6:00 pm.
