Obituary: Elena G. Ottens Lansing, Michigan Elena G. Ottens, 92, of Lansing, Michigan passed away 23, 2014 in East Lansing. She will be deeply missed by family and friends. Elena was born May 7, 1922 in Lima, Peru, South America to Abdon and Josefina (Castillo) Robles. She worked for Pan American Airways in Lima, and relocated to New York City, where she worked as a translator for Pan Am and Ford Motor . Elena met the love of her life Donald W. Ottens in New York City at a Catholic social club. were married in 1960 at St. Monicas Catholic Church in Queens, New York City. relocated to Lansing, Michigan in the 1960s to raise their sons, Peter and Donald, Jr. Elena became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1969. Elena pursued her dream to earn a college degree and become a teacher. She began her studies at Lansing Community , where she earned an Associates Degree in Spanish. Elena continued at Michigan State University to earn a Bachelors Degree of Arts in Spanish Education at the age of 72. Elena taught Spanish to high school students for the Lansing School District. She retired from Lansing School District at the age of 80. Elena was a watercolor artist as well as an inspirational leader. She enjoyed music, dance and loved to read. As a devout Roman Catholic, Elena was a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, East Lansing. She was a member of St. Theresa's Guild and The Lansing Art Gallery, where she displayed her artwork. Elena was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald W. Ottens, Sr., and her parents. Surviving to honor Elenas love and memory are her sons, Peter J. Ottens and Donald W. Ottens, Jr.; and sister, Riquedina Robles, Lima, Peru. Visitation will be 10:00am , 2, 2014 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 955 Alton Rd., East Lansing, MI 48823, followed by a funeral Mass with the Rev. Mark Inglot officiating. Committal Rites and Interment for Elena will be at St. Joseph Catholic , Lansing. Contributions in memory of Elena can be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, East Lansing. Obituary: Donald W. Ottens, Sr. Lansing Age 85, passed away 23, 2013 in East Lansing, MI. Donald was born 17, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY to Jonas H. and Genevieve (Kane) Ottens. Donald received his Jesuit High School education at Brooklyn Preparatory in New York City and received his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. He served in the US Army in Italy, post WWII; constructed expressways in New York City and relocated to Lansing in the 1960s to raise his sons. Donald designed roads and bridges for the State of Michigan. He was a devout Roman Catholic and long-time parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by his sister, Genevieve Printon and brother, Theodore Ottens. Surviving is his beautiful wife, Elena Ottens, whom he met at a Catholic Club in Manhattan, NY, and sons, Donald, Jr. and Peter. Also surviving is his sister, Patricia Baum. A funeral mass will be held , 30, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Road, East Lansing, with Rev. James W. Lothamer officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic in Lansing. The family will receive friends for visitation 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Contributions may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in memory of Donald. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman s, East Lansing.
