Obituary: Howard Taylor Niblette passed peacefully in his 98th year on this earth at bedtime on May 11, 2015 in Suffield, CT. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on 31, 1917 to Jean Swenson and Clement Niblette, he was little brother to Jean Lavina (Burrows/Swain) and big brother to Winifred (de Rensis). The large Swenson family played a huge role in the lives of the young Niblette family especially when Clement and Jean moved to Lyndhurst , New Jersey and many of the Swensons moved to Philadelphia, PA. Howards father, Clement, died of a sepsis in 1931, just as the Great Depression was rearing its head, leaving a young family to be creative – Howard often told of working in a small local grocery helping to clean up and of riding his bike to provide deliveries to families. He studied business in high school, was a member of the local Phalanx Club where he met many lifelong friends. graduation in 1935, he studied banking at the American Institute of Banking in New York City. He used his business skills with the Bendix Scintilla (Aviation) Corporation, providing technical guidance at the Sidney, NY plant where he had a room for the week and commuted home to NJ every other weekend.During World War II Bendix made nearly every ancillary instrument or equipment for military aircraft. The Bendix radio division was established in 1937 to make radio transmitter/receivers for aircraft and other types of avionics. During the war Bendix manufactured about 75% of all avionics in US aircraft. During and after the war Bendix made radar equipment of various types. Howard enlisted in the Army and, as he wrote many years later to his nephew, Bill Beck – induction at Fort Dix, we were shipped to Camp Stewart, Ga. for basic training. Upon completion, we were shipped (by train) to Fort Bliss Tx and assigned to the 385th Ordnance Maintenance Co where I helped the Co Clerk. then decided to send me to Aberdeen Md. to instrument repair school for 10 weeks. That was pretty good since I could get to Lyndhurst if I got a pass. returning to Ft. Bliss we were later shipped by train to Seattle where we were loaded aboard a General class cargo ship (converted) which took 5000 of the Army personnel to Okinawa which took 59 days since they were waiting for the marines to secure the island. We finally dropped anchor at Naha, Okinawa and took landing craft to shore. We set up camp 2 miles frorn Naha where there was nothing standing except a hall. I never did get inside to see it. We did our maintenance and later when the war was over they started to send some of the personnel home – mostly those who had the most time in. So I was transferred from the 385th Co to the 305th Battalion and eventually became the acting Master Sgt (without the 6 stripes) and I had only my 5 (Tech Sgt). Later on I was transferred to the X (Tenth) Army headquarters and had a desk job outside the Generals office. So much for that- and soon got my orders to go home (through the Panama Canal) which was a thrill. We landed in New York and then to Fort Dix for separation. Our recreation (in Okinawa) was mostly walking the beach looking for Cat-eye shells which we later made into necklaces. Also once or twice I went to the movies at the base theater if we could get a Jeep for transportation. I also made use of the Field Hospital for about 2 weeks with a bout of pneumonia. This is the best I can recall. Howard was honorably discharged from the Army in May, 1946; he was again honored in 2007 when he received the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal from the State of New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. When Howard returned home from WWII, he reconnected with a woman from high school who always captivated him and became his wife… Eleanor McEachern - the love of his life. The two of them spread their love far and wide to bring into this world a family that comprised Robert Kenneth Niblette, Susan Eleanor Niblette, Roy Howard Niblette, and Bonnie Lee Niblette Stephens. Howard worked for Republic Steel and K.A. Exports in New York City. He turned his avocation –Stamp Collecting – into a part-time and eventual fulltime job as owner of Fairidge Stamp located originally on Chestnut and finally on Broad Street in Ridgewood, NJ. A few years after Ellie retired from the Waldwick School System, Howard sold his shop and the two were able to enjoy travel adventures throughout the country on AARP tours. When Howard and Ellie finally urned the mortgage in 1984, the kids delivered the icing on the cake by providing them with a cruise to the Bermuda. Dad, Howard, Uncle How, Howie, Harry, Grandpa, Pop-pop, Mr. Fairidge, Mr. Waldwick...was the last of a wonderful generation of Swenson/Niblette/McEachern/Beck/de Rensis family patriarchs. He took great pride in Bonnie and her husband, Michael Stephens and their son, Andrew Michael Stephens; Bobs wife, Judith M. Hacking Niblette - and their children- R. Kenneth Niblette II, and James William Niblette, Jims wife- Jennifer Frederick Niblette , and their children, Dana, Brigid, & Ahnya Niblette. He was cherished by Roy and his wife, Linda Niblette and could elicit big smiles from Susan and her life partner, Lori Paserchia. He sincerely rejoiced in camaraderie with nephews, nieces, spouses-in-law, his best friend-by-marriage, in-laws, out-laws, Grand-dogs, Grand-Cats and all those who loved *his* beloved family (and especially those who could make him laugh or could bluff a good poker hand!) Howard is predeceased by wife Eleanor, sisters Jean Niblette Burrows Swain, Winifred Niblette de Rensis, son Robert Kenneth Niblette, and grandson Robert Kenneth Niblette II. He continued to teach by love and by example until his last day on earth. His kindness, honesty, gentility and character were continued... |
