Obituary: Ethel Mae Neilson, age 71, died unexpectedly on 13, 2017 in her Pueblo home. Ethel was born 6th, 1946 in Pueblo CO, the daughter of Raymond Floyd Mitchell and Emma Beatrice Casey. Ethel was raised on the west side of Pueblo with her five brothers and sisters. Ethel is survived by her sisters Sue Gray, Clara Debski and her brothers Billy and Raymond Mitchell. She was preceeded in death by her loving husband Ben Neilson and her older brother Kenny Pace. Although her family was not financially well to do, she was very rich in spirit. Ethel was a very athletic child having run track and playing volleyball at Pueblo Centennial High School. Ethel gave birth to her first son, Edward. She and her mother Emma rasied Ed in the same home that Ethel had spent her childhood. Six years later, Ethel had a beautiful daughter Shannon. Again, she very independently raised her two children with as much love as any mother could have ever given. In 1972 she married the love of her life Ben Neilson. She brought two children into this marriage and worked very hard to create a loving family. The Neilson family moved to Swink, Colorado in 1974 so that Ben could pursue his career as a Colorado State Patrolman. The Neilson family was blessed with a third child, Ben Jr. While living in Swink, Ethel had the cleanest house, best smelling kitchen as well as a huge garden growing a ton of tomatoes and strawberries! She gave her children a wonderful childhood and taught them many life lessons. The family later relocated back to Pueblo, CO in the winter of 1980. Ethel was an incredibly hard worker and always found time for others. She spent most of her working career in the health care industry in a number of support service type departments. Prior to retirement in 1996, she was the Linen Department Supervisor at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital. Ethel was extremely well-liked and respected by her co-workers and staff. In addition to working full-time and raising their three children, Ethel also enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and generally making others smile. She was a very devoted grandmother to six grandchildren: Gillian McCain, Alyssa Neilson, Jeremy Neilson, Moudi Neilson, Michael McPherson and Caitlynn McPherson. She had 4 great grandchildren: She was also an amazing mother-in-law to Larry McPherson,,, spouse of Shannon, Maggie Neilson spouse of Ben Jr. and Kelly Russell spouse of Ed. She will be missed by her family and many friends. Ethel was a member of Word of Faith Church where she served as the "Mother of the Church" as well as running the kitchen for many potlucks and receptions. Her soulful being was a source of love and direction for so many people. There will be a viewing service for family and friends 19th from 5:00pm till 8:00pm at Imperial , 5450 Hwy 78 Pueblo, CO. services will commence at 2:00 at Imperial on , 20th. Following the burial, a potluck reception will be held at her church at 3939 Redwood Lane, Pueblo, CO. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name to Word of Faith Church or PAWS. |

Obituary: Ben Neilson 1/3/47 to 2/14/2015 Ben Neilson was born in Bad Nauheim Germany to Irmgard Ihls and Sergeant Andrew Neilson on 3, 1947. He lived his early childhood in Frankfurt Germany. His father was a Sergeant in the US Army and moved the family often. Ben was typically the ew kid in town and had to work hard to make quick friendships. He was very witty and made friends easily. He was most known for being a stand out athlete. Upon graduation from Central High School in 1966, Ben joined the United States Army at the tender age of 19. He served 2 tours in Viet-Nam in the Armys 9th Infantry Division in the Me Kong Delta Region. While in Viet Nam he was promoted to Sergeant and was attached to the 7th Division Rangers. Following his return in 1969 he attended Southern Colorado State where he majored in Education and was a stand-out football player. Following his educational pursuits he was invited to try out for the Minnesota Vikings. Unfortunately, Ben tore his ACL and never competed at the professional level. However, that didn hinder his competitiveness. He was an avid weight lifter and competed in numerous Body Building competitions. He placed in numerous competitions and won Mr. Southern Colorado Open in 1985. Professionally, Ben was a highly regarded Colorado State Patrolman. He retired from the force in 2002 having faithfully served the State of Colorado for 28 years. One of his assignments was to act as a personal Security for the Governor of Colorado. He also was on the set of Chevy Chases movie Vacation where he shared barbs with Chevy. a wirl wind romance, Ben was married to Ethel Mitchell on 17th, 1973. were blessed to be married for 41 years and 11 months. Ben has 4 children: Edward and wife Dr. Kelly Russell, Shannon and husband Lawrence McPherson, Kim and husband John Blossom and Ben Jr. and Maggie Neilson. He has 8 adoring grandchildren: Alyssa Neilson, Air Force Sergeant Jeremy Neilson, Gillian Bland, Ronan Neilson, Michael McPherson, Caitlynn McPherson, Destiny and Dominic Blossom. Ben also has 3 amazing great grandchildren: Violet, Penelope and Oliver Brown. He is survived by his cousins Linda Neilson, Nancy & Frank Crandall and Peter and Ulla Jung of Altena, Germany. He is also survived by many loving in-laws. He and his wife were blessed to travel throughout his homeland of Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, France, Mexico and all parts of the United States. His hobbies included reading, creating miniature war dioramas and building models. He has two rooms in his home dedicated to these dioramas. He is preceded in death by his parents Irmgard and Andrew Neilson, his Omi and Opa Jaunish and many other relatives. As his health declined during the last 2 years of his life he was cared for by his devoted wife Ethel, children Ben and Shannon and grandchild Alyssa. He was also blessed by the friendship and compassionate care of Shirley Andrews. He had many friends and loved ones and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Wounded Warriors Project or Paws for Life. |
