Obituary: Nord S. Nation, M.D. 12, 1929, Black River, Jamaica, British West Indies - 8, 2012, Long Beach, California Dr. Nord Nation was a pediatrician for fifty-four years, taking pride in the care of hundreds of newborns, adolescents, and patients beyond the pediatric years. His office hours were always extended for unexpected emergencies and his patients knew he was always just a phone call away. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by love on the 8th of , 2012, in Long Beach, California. He was 83 years young! Born on the 12, 1929, in Black River, Jamaica, British West Indies, his was the second of five children born to Wilfred and Pearl Nation. His father being a Seventh-day Adventist minister, the family home was always filled with faith, love and music. It is said by his family, that at a very early age, Nord knew he wanted to be a doctor. He studied hard in school, graduating at the age of sixteen from high school. He was accepted to EMC (Emmanuel Missionary ) in Michigan that following fall. Packed with two pairs of socks and two pairs of pants (one set for school and work, the other for church) he boarded a boat out of Montego Bay, Jamaica. arriving in Miami, Florida, he took the long bus ride north to Berrien Springs, Michigan. This is where he first encountered the phenomenon known as SNOW! As the story has been related, he burnt one pair of his socks on the radiator and had to go sockless that winter. Nord returned to Jamaica, where he taught science and math at the West Indies for a couple of years. Applying for graduate school, he was accepted at Pacific Union in Angwin, California (near Napa, CA) where he earned his a masters degree in Marine Biology. Not to be discouraged from his passion for being a physician, he reapplied to medical school and was accepted, graduating from Loma Linda University Medical School in 1957. Professionally, Dr. Nation did his rotating internship at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, his pediatric residency at Loma Linda University under Dr. Robert Chinnock, his fellowship with Dr. Paul Worley in Infectious Disease at L.A.U.S.C Medical and at USC, assisting with studies on amoxicillin with meningitis and studies on Tetanus. Dr. Nation was a Clinical Prof. of Pediatrics at USC Medical School (now Emeritus Clinical), an Assoc. Prof. of Pediatrics at Loma Linda University, the Chief of Pediatrics at White Memorial Medical (instrumental in the programs accreditation), the Director of Medical Education at White Memorial, and the president of Los Angeles Pediatric Society. Nord was also involved with the East Los Angeles Rotary Club, serving as president and receiving honors as Rotarian of the Year and the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow award for his humanitarian relief efforts for the victims of the 1976 Guatemala earthquake disaster. In 1978, Nord left his teaching and practice at White Memorial and moved his office to Long Beach. He joined the staff at Long Beach Memorial where he served on the hospital Board and Finance Committee at LBMH, as well as a board member on the Childrens Dental Clinic, Miller Childrens Hospital. Nord had a passion for teaching and will always be remembered as a gifted educator. He was an avid fisherman from the deep-sea waters of Alaska and Baja, to the lakes and streams across the United States, and enjoyed this pastime with his wife and sons. He was a competitive linksman who took great pride in his golf game and his two hole-in-ones. He was passionate about his BMWs and loved the drive to their La Quinta desert retreat every . He was a voracious reader, a crossword puzzles champion, a classical music lover, a connoisseur of great wine, an accomplished snow skier, a USC Trojan football fan (Fight ON!), and he even took up self-defense martial arts classes in Israeli Krav Maga throughout his sixties. He thoroughly enjoyed visiting and also traveling with friends to Hawaii, the Ozarks, and many memorable cruises. Most of all, he always had a good joke to tell! We will miss his wit, his friendship and those crazy birthday cards! He is preceded in death by his sister Erline Paterson, brother Will Nation, and son Robert Nation. He is survived by the love of his life, Ann, his wife of 22 years; two sons from a previous marriage, Douglas and David Nation; two granddaughters Michelle and Cheyenne Nation; sister Olive Fletcher (Miami, FL), brother Murl Nation (Los Banos, CA), and sister-in-law Beverly Nation (Loma Linda, CA); and loving nieces and nephews.
