Obituary: Anything is possible. That is what Duong Thi Nguyen believed about life. She was a creative woman, a perpetual inventor, who seemed to be able to find a solution for any difficulty confronting her. She had faith in her ability to find those solutions. Duong thoroughly enjoyed understanding how things worked. She possessed an inquisitive, confident, and rational nature matched with a versatile and agile mind. Duong was a person who believed that she could achieve whatever she set out to do. Duong was born on 18, 1923 in Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Vietnam. Her parents were Nguyen V. Nguyen and Rong Thi Bui. Duong was raised in Hai Phong, Vietnam. She showed her ingenuity even as a child. When she was confronted with a problem, Duong could develop an imaginative solution, and she derived satisfaction from knowing she had that ability. This same talent for finding solutions had a positive bearing on Duongs family relationships. Duong was raised with one sibling, Quang Van Nguyen. When a difficult situation or dilemma arose within the family, Duong was always there to help figure out a solution for making things work. Endowed with an appetite for knowing how her world worked, Duong enjoyed school, especially when the learning experience involved dissecting and probing the unknown. Duong was adept at scrutinizing different possibilities and designing innovative solutions. She graduated from Nam Dinh Francaise High School in 1942. She enjoyed some courses more than others, having favorite classes and teachers. Her favorite class in high school was Prep French. Some of Duongs accomplishments in high school included distinguished awards in French and math. In 1943 Duong exchanged wedding vows with Huong Ngoc Nguyen at Hanoi Temple of Hanoi, Vietnam. Duong was adept at devising original and creative ways to enhance and improve the marriage partnership. Duong was seldom a critical person, but rather the one who was able to bring out the best in others. Duong was an entertaining conversationalist who was quick to respond to her spouses needs. She was very perceptive in recognizing others feelings, especially regarding Huongs. Duongs remarkable talent for being inventive influenced her relationship with her children. She would create original, clever and fun games for her kids and had a knack for finding ways to make everyday events, even chores, enjoyable to them. Duong was blessed with eight children. She had five sons, Hung, Tai, Loi, Khoa, and Tien, and three daughters, Phuong, Nhung, and Hoa. Someone who was quick to laugh, Duong found it easy to spend lots of time with her children, but she was never overbearing or guilty of pushing herself on them. Duong was also blessed with thirteen grandchildren. Duong was continually concerned with the status of local, national and even world affairs. Her keen interest and strong values led her to become active in her community. Duong was an active member of the Equal Rights for Women Association in Tuy Hoa Local District. Faith and religion were important to Duong. During that time, she was well respected by friends and on many occasions was appointed to be the organizer for religious special events. Duong was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. She had Kiki and Muc, both Labrador Retrievers. Duong had Kiki for 6 years and Muc for 5 years. Duong passed away on 19, 2009 at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, California. She is survived by her children, Hung, Phuong, Tai, Loi, Nhung, Khoa, Tien, and Hoa, and her grandchildren, Due, Chau, Hai, Nhu, Mai, Duc, Thuy, Quan, Thu, Steven, and Michael. Services were held in the Orchid Room at Sunshine Chapel at Oak Hill in San Jose, California. Duong was laid to rest in Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose, California. During her lifetime, nothing appeared impossible to Duong. Duong was able to recognize the possibilities a new idea held, even when those around her could not. For Duong, the traditional way of doing things fell short of her expectations, especially if there were original and untested methods for handling a challenge. For Duong Thi Nguyen, the fun of living her life could be found in the challenge. |
