Obituary: NEIMAN HARVEY L. NEIMAN, M.D., FACR Chief Executive Officer American of Radiology Radiology Visionary and Brilliant Leader, Supported Radiology, Colleagues and Staff with Determination, Dignity and Spirit Feb. 8, 1943 ~ 5, 2014 Harvey L. Neiman, M.D., FACR, chief executive officer of the American of Radiology (ACR), died 5 following a long illness. Dr. Neiman was widely considered a medical visionary who dedicated his professional life to improving patient care. "Dr. Neiman helped make health care better and safer. The steps he championed enabled dramatic improvements in patient care and helped shape modern medicine," said Ardis Dee Hoven, M.D., president of the American Medical Association. Under Neiman's leadership, the ACR rose to be one of the world's largest and most influential medical specialty societies, taking historic steps to promote health care quality, safety and efficiency. He spearheaded ACR co-founding the Image Wisely® and Image Gently® initiatives to raise awareness of opportunities to lower radiation dose used in medical imaging. Neiman also guided the development of the Dose Index Registry®, which helps imaging practices track, optimize and benchmark radiation dose used in patient scans. During his tenure, ACR successfully educated Congress to require accreditation of freestanding advanced diagnostic imaging facilities, improving the quality and safety of imaging care nationwide. Neiman envisioned and helped create the ACR Education to train physicians in advanced medical imaging and image-guided techniques. Upon closing of the Walter Reed Army Medical , which housed a world-renowned radiologic pathology correlation course offered by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, he spearheaded creation of the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP®). This preserved nearly a century of knowledge and enabled current and future radiology residents to continue to receive a vital part of their medical training. Most recently, Neiman's direction was integral to the formation of the Radiology Leadership Institute (RLI), which provides radiologists with business and leadership training to help make them better administrators and leaders in the changing health care environment. He was also intimately involved with the creation and implementation of the Journal of the American of Radiology (JACR®) and the Annual ACR Forum. "Dr. Neiman's support of clinical trials coordinated at the ACR Clinical Research and cutting-edge physician education helped medicine identify new technologies to save lives and speed the flow of medical advancements into clinical practice worldwide," said Jeffrey R. Immelt, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of General Electric, one of the world's leading diagnostic imaging manufacturers, and chair of the Radiology Leadership Institute capital campaign. For his many efforts, Neiman received the Gold Medal award from both the ACR and the Radiological Society of North America, as well as the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, which he helped found and served as a president. He recently received the prestigious Béclere Medal, the highest honor awarded by the International Society of Radiology. He also was awarded the first RLI Leadership Luminary award. Neiman was a member and distinguished fellow of the ACR for nearly 40 years. In 2003, he was named executive director and subsequently, CEO. He served as a member of the ACR Board of Chancellors from 1994-2002 and as chairman of the board from 2000-2002. Neiman published more than 120 scientific papers in referred journals, 26 book chapters and authored the book, Angiography of Vascular Disease. He also gave more than 277 guest lectures and scientific presentations worldwide. "ACR members and staff, the radiology community, and organized medicine have lost a dear friend and colleague, exceptional leader, mentor and luminary," said Bibb Allen, Jr., M.D., FACR, chair of the American of Radiology Board of Chancellors. Harvey L. Neiman was born 8, 1943 in Detroit. He earned his bachelor's degree and medical degree from Wayne State University. an internship at the University of Cincinnati Hospital, Neiman completed his residency and a fellowship in angiography at the University of Michigan Medical . He served as a professor of radiology at Northwestern University Medical School and Temple University School of Medicine. From 1985-2003 Neiman was chair of the Department of Radiology at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh. Neiman served as chief of cardiovascular radiology at Walter Reed Army Medical and chief of cardiac radiology at University Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. He was immensely proud of his family who survives him: his wife, Ellen (Ellie) Neiman, his two daughters Jennifer and Hilary, and his grandson William. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the Harvey L. Neiman Molecular Imaging Fund c/o the American of Radiology Foundation. The website is www.acr.org/neimanfund. Obituary: Walter Cap Neilson, III of Williamsburg passed away on , 8, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in the Bremerton, Washington Naval Hospital on May 25, 1944.
Cap is survived by his ride of almost 53 years, Linda Ezell Neilson and their three children; daughter, Kathleen Neilson Cooper and son-in-law, Jim Cooper, of Mechanicsville, VA; son, Eric Neilson and daughter-in-law Ellen Neilson, of Ashland, VA; son, Greg Neilson and daughter-in-law Cindy Neilson of Strasburg, VA;
two grandchildren, James Cooper, III, and Samantha Cooper. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Albers of Dallas, TX and brother, Rick Murray (Kathy) of Ft Worth, TX as well as several nieces and nephews.
From a young age Cap knew that education was the key to opportunity. He attended North Texas State and the University of Texas to study Journalism. While in college he worked on the school newspaper and covered President John F. Kennedys visit to Texas on 22, 1963, the day that President Kennedy was assassinated. Today, a large wall mural in the School Book Depository Museum in Dallas shows Cap, along with other members of the press corps on that tragic day.
Cap paid for his education with a series of part-time jobs ranging from taxi driver to mail clerk. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in various positions for 25 years before taking early retirement after serving for several years as Newport News Postmaster.
A new chapter in his life began in 1992 when he founded his own business, Landmark Appraisals. He rapidly took to the challenges of private enterprise and was highly sought after for his straight-shooting approach to commercial real estate valuation.
During this same period he began another interest, Rotary International. Rotary's motto of "Service Above Self" epitomized the way that Cap lived his life. He was a past President of the Virginia Peninsula Rotary Club and served as District Governor for Rotary District 7600 in 2012-13, overseeing 60 clubs from Fluvanna to the Eastern Shore. He proudly served on numerous regional and national committees and never hesitated to give of his time whenever Rotary called. Even in his final days he was offering creative recommendations to increase membership in his club.
Traveling with his wife Linda was probably his favorite pastime. visited 40 states, including Alaska and visited 19 countries including the British Isles, Europe, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand.
Cap was strong in his Christian faith and served King of Glory Lutheran Church in numerous ways, including heading up a weekly prayer breakfast for 16 years. In addition, he served the Salvation Army as Board Chairman and participated in multiple disaster relief missions, some of them hundreds of miles away. On 11, 2001 he led the Salvation Army disaster relief mission to the Pentagon and was on-site within twelve hours of the terrorist attack. He was a strong supporter of the YMCA, serving on the Metropolitan YMCA board and the Camp Kekoka board. The love of the YMCA stems back to the early 1950s when a camp scholarship was awarded to two young boys, Cap and his brother, Rick, when money was tight at home. He was also a Board Member of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation, offering sound advice regarding dozens of grant proposals for the past several years.
Cap was an avid golfer and member of The Williamsburg Club. He and Linda enjoyed many golf vacations together. In more recent years they took up traveling the country in their RV, making new friends wherever they went. He was also a voracious reader and his knowledge of American History was encyclopedic.
A memorial service will be held at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 4897 Longhill Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23188 on , 16 at 10:30 AM in the Founders Hall. Following the service, a luncheon will be held in the church Fellowship Hall. A private internment of ashes will take place at King of Glory Memorial Garden.
Memorial donations may be made to Camp Kekoka, P.O. Box 580, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Virginia and Ed Reynolds, her sons Thomas and James Neilson, her grandchildren Ryan, Abbie Layne, and Mitch, her great grandson Teddy, and her loyal dog, Bandit. Remarkably, Nancy passed away on the birthday of her late husband. She loved Roger deeply, and we think the timing was no accident. Nancy graduated from George School, a private Quaker high school near Newtown, PA. She then attended Endicott Junior , and graduated from East Stroudsburg State University in Pennsylvania. Nancy was an elementary school teacher, specializing in teaching third and fourth grade. She was a loving wife and mother, and devoted herself to raising children and nurturing her family. Nancy was also an avid gardener, a gifted painter whose medium was watercolor, an accomplished pianist, and a very, very, very enthusiastic photographer. In addition, she was a devoted supporter of Roger's successful football coaching career. Roger's former football players continued to seek out Nancy's advice and guidance over the years, a practice they maintained even through the last few weeks of her life. Nancy and her husband, Roger, retired from teaching in 1985 and lived for over 25 years in Seven Lakes, North Carolina before moving to Williamsburg Virginia in 2010. Nancy and Roger enjoyed traveling after they retired, visiting over forty countries. Nancy was also a lifelong supporter of the Silver Bay YMCA Conference and Family Retreat in upstate New York, vacationing there often from her childhood through her later years. A small family memorial service will be held.
