Obituary: Death is the Golden Key that Opens the Doors of Eternity. George S. Nicolatus, beloved father and grandfather, died peacefully in his sleep on , 24, 2015. His generosity and kindness, and his loving heart and spirit, will be remembered by all who knew him. He was born in Stamford, Connecticut, the third of six children, to Stavros (Steven) Nicoletos and Mary Vergakis Nicoletos. His father, a Greek immigrant, worked at the Yale and Towne lock manufacturing company in Stamford and, beginning at age five, George started shining shoes to provide additional money for the family. He was so good at it he was dubbed the Shoe Shine King. George attended Rice Middle School, where he discovered his passion for art and architecture, and graduated in 1941 from Stamford High School, where he was an honor roll student and voted Best Dressed by his classmates. He officially changed his last name to Nicolatus when he volunteered to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Force on 18, 1942. A proud World War II veteran, George served primarily in the China-Burma-India theater as a gunner on a bomber crew. He was honorably discharged in 1946. While stationed at Camp Kearns for overseas training before being deployed, George and a friend attended a service at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Salt Lake City. On that day, George first saw a beautiful young lady named Viola Kerikas walking down the aisle with her father. Upon seeing her, George announced to his friend that Viola was the girl he was going to marry. Sure enough, upon his return from the war, George married Viola on 10, 1946. were married for 57 years, until Violas death on 17, 2003, and made their home in Salt Lake City, where they raised their daughter Maria and son Stephen. settling in Utah, George attended the Salt Lake Technical and the University of Utah, where he studied architecture. He later served as Project Manager for the Salt Lake Civic Auditorium Complex (subsequently christened the Salt Palace), and was appointed by Governor Cal Rampton to serve on the Symphony (now Abravanel) Hall Design & Construction Committee and the Capitol Theater Restoration Committee. From 1969 to his retirement in 1993, George was a Senior Vice President and Manager of Corporate Real Estate for First Security Bank, a career he treasured due to the many friendships and professional associations he enjoyed. George strongly believed that every individual has a responsibility to dedicate part of their life to the improvement of their community and country. He often said A person has an obligation to society. You have to leave the community a better place than you found it. Thats the true worth of life. And he embodied that ethos and led by example throughout his life. George gave back to his community in many ways, including serving as President of the Utah Society to Prevent Blindness; President of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Long Range Planning & Development Board; Vice Chairman for the United Funds Budget Committee; Finance Committee Chairman for Travelers Aid; Chairman of the Salt Lake Sheriff Merit Commission; a Foundation Board Member for Holy Cross Hospital; a member of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce; a board member for the University of Utah Museum of Fine Arts; and a member of the Salt Lake Board of Appeals and the Salt Lake City Planning & Zoning Commission. George frequently described his service on the Board of Appeals and Planning & Zoning Commission as the most exciting period of his life and felt particularly grateful to have an opportunity to contribute to the future planning and development of his adopted hometown. He was also instrumental in encouraging women-owned businesses to take an active role with the Chamber of Commerce, which made his wife and daughter very proud. Upon his retirement, George spent his time painting, reading good books, having coffee with his friends, and playing golf, the game he loved the most. George was a member of Hidden Valley Country Club for many years and deeply valued the numerous friendships he formed on the links, especially his Hack & Thrash buddies at Mountain Dell. George was preceded in death by his parents Steven and Mary, his wife Viola, his brother John, and sisters Catherine (Kay) Romanos, Anne Coviello, and Irene Vasilakos. He is survived by his daughter Maria (Harry) Pappasideris; son Stephen (Melina) Nicolatus; grandson Jonathan Pappasideris; granddaughter Elysia Barr; sister Helen Vento; sisters-in-law Helene Luras, Effie Carr, and Maxine Kerikas; brother in law Mike (Sharon) Kerikas; three nieces and eight nephews. A viewing will be held on , 4, 2016 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 PM. services will be held on , 5, 2016 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 279 South 300 West, at 12:00 PM. Interment will be at Mount Olivet , 1342 East 500 South, in Salt Lake City, Utah. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Greek Orthodox Community Restoration Fund or the Hellenic Cultural Museum (279 South 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101) or to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be left at www.wasatchlawn.com. In 2004, George wrote a note about his life that read, in part: One of my great enjoyments was having a wonderful close association with my grandson, Jonathan, and watching him grow up and develop into a beautiful young man with superb human values and love for those around him. I am so very proud of his accomplishments - his graduation from Stanford University and his continuation of his graduate studies at the University of Utah School of Law. Jonathan, find the time to sit down to speak to me after Im gone, I shall always be there to listen. |

Obituary: Janice Bourne Nicodemus 1921 - 2010 On , 9, 2010, our wonderful mother, Janice Bourne Nicodemus, passed away at the age of 89. Janice was born on 15, 1921 to Kenneth E. and Lucille Bourne. She was a lifetime member of the LDS church and served in various church callings. She married Joseph L. Nicodemus on 14, 1942. Janice had always loved music and had taken piano lessons as a young girl, but when Joe surprised her with a Hammond Spinet Organ in 1956, he could never have guessed this would launch a 35-year career of teaching and playing the organ. Janice retired from teaching when she was 72, but never lost her love of music. Though she suffered for many years from a debilitating lung condition, she always chose to concentrate on the positive aspects of her life. We always said of her: She blooms where shes planted. She made new friends and held tight to her old ones. She was gracious and grateful for whatever kindness came her way. She loved everyone, and they, in turn, loved her. She leaves behind an amazing legacy and a family who cherished her every day of her life. We have wonderful memories to sustain us, and an unparalleled example of how to maintain a positive attitude under difficult circumstances. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister (Renee Bushman), and her grandson (Kip Nicodemus). She is survived by her son Jim (Sue) Nicodemus and daughter Judy (George) Robertson, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of The Wentworth at East Millcreek and to the team from Rocky Mountain Hospice for their loving care. Services will be 16, 2010 at 12 Noon at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. |
