Obituary: PHILIP PHUOC XUAN NGUYEN, HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER (1953-2015) Nguy?n Xuân Phu?c was born in a small village of Khánh Bình, near the Tru?ng Son Range in the Qu? Son Disctrict, Qu?ng Nam Province on 23rd, 1953. Due to the confusion of registration, his birthday was later registered as 26 1954. His parents did not bother to correct it, as the difference was only 27 days. His father was one of the first pastors of the Evangelical Church in Vietnam. Phu?c was born during the last stage of the Indochinese War between colonial France and the Vi?t Minh resistance. The war was intense with many raids and attacks by French Air Force. The village of Khánh Bình was suspected to be a stronghold of Viet Minh resistance and thus was bombed heavily several times. The church shared the fate of the village, and was totally destroyed in 1953. His family had to seek shelter in a goat stable nearby. Phu?c was born in a goat stable (Chu?ng Dê). Fortunately, the war ended in 1954, thus Phu?c rarely experienced the effects of the war, yet the war remained strong in his psyche. In 1955 the family moved to the district capital of Qu? Son, where Phu?c went to preschool and elementary school. He completed elementary school in H?i An, where his father was transferred to in 1959. As his father moved around for ministry, he was enrolled in several schools for his junior high education, and finally he was accepted to the Petrus Ky High School, one of the two most prestigious High School in Saigon, the other being Chu Van An High School. In 1972 he graduated from Petrus Ky High school, Magna Cum Laude, and was ready for university. He then took the entrance exam for the National Institute for Public Administration, and passed with distinction. He was ready for three years of learning to become a government official. Most of the graduates of the National Institute of Public Administration (Vi?n Qu?c Gia Hành Chánh) were appointed Deputy District Chiefs, which were prestigious positions in the government administration with bright futures. In the meantime, his brothers in the USA were trying to get him a scholarship to go to an American university. applied for him at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey, and he was accepted with a tuition scholarship. In 1972 he came to US, but was late for registration at the University. So he stayed with his sister in San Diego working as a dishwasher at a restaurant. The American dream for a newly high school graduate became a nightmare of hard labor. He often nostalgiaed about the life in Vietnam, had he stayed with the National Institute of Public Administration, and became a government official. But he soon realized what he could do if he got an American college education, so he learned to endure the hardships. In early 1973 he began his studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and realized that even though he was very good student with good English training, a university education in English for a Vietnamese boy was not easy, especially when he had to work hard for his upkeep. Every day he had to study English, learn new vocabulary, learn new ways of doing things in American society, and work hard as a dishwasher at the university cafeteria or to clear snow for all the buildings on snowy days. As a child he never had to work that hard, but now he had to provide for himself. Doing anything available to earn money to pay for room and board. The jobs he did were often the ones that no American wanted, so sometimes he became depressed and disappointed. However, eventually he found a job as a sexton in an Episcopal Church in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, about 20 miles from the University. This job brought him good income and joy, since being a PK he knew the procedures of church ministry and church work. Besides, the Rector was a very kind person who sympathized with him as a struggling foreign student in a strange land with a strange culture. His relationship to this Episcopal Church gave him a good income and comfort due to the kindness of the Rector and the congregation. His job was basically the custodian of the church. He had to make sure that the church buildings were clean and in order for the services, and more importantly he had to make sure that the Church was locked and secured, so that nobody could break in. Although the position of sexton is a lowly position it is a position of trust as the church gave him keys to all the rooms of the Church including the study of the Rector. Through his relationship with this Church he began to develop a new spirituality, a spirituality of reflection, quietness and concern for social justice especially for the oppressed and the underprivileged. One of his favorite scriptures is Proverbs 31: 8: Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who need an advocate. Later in his life, this principle became the guiding light for most of his activities. He always had the ambition to change society through his advocacy. He struggled for justice and peace for all. The events of May 1975 changed his life forever. He became a stateless person. As a foreign student, when South Vietnamese collapsed, all Vietnamese in America were in limbo. were no longer citizens of South Vietnam since South Vietnam no longer existed, and the American policy had not changed in regards to foreign students. He lost his scholarship, and had to find different ways to make a living. Fortunately, he found a job with a Volag (Voluntary Agency) to help resettle refugees in Fort Indian Town Gap in Pennsylvania. The six months that he worked at Ft. Indian Town Gap gave him a lot of satisfaction. He was able to make continued... |
