Obituary: DENNIS E. NEWTON, JR, 93 Dennis (Denny) E. Newton, Jr. died 14, 2012 surrounded by family, listening to music he loved. He was born in Slidell, Louisiana, 14, 1918 to Dennis E. Newton, Sr. and Ausie Culley Newton, but was back in Texas before his 1st birthday. He lived all over Texas throughout his youth following his fathers job supervising laying of pipe for oil transport. In 1931, the family moved to Kirbyville, and began farming 44 acres, living in a log cabin that he, his dad and his grandfather built from pine trees they cleared from their land. He attended Texas A&M until 1939, studying geology and business administration. He then worked for the Texas Department of Transportation and married Mary Collins of Alvin, Texas on 4, 1941. He soon joined the US Navy and served in the Aleutian Islands during WWII achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class before discharge in , 1946. In 1947 he worked for Union Carbide in Texas City, Texas and was promoted to corporate headquarters in New York City in 1954. His love of Texas brought him back to Houston in 1957 where he worked for the next 50 years. He joined Brown and Root, Inc. in 1973 rising to the position of Vice-President of Procurement. He especially enjoyed his many years of international business travel to Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean, embracing cultures, learning languages and making many lifelong friends. During his career, he was president of the National Association of Purchasing Management and was invited to serve on the Minority Purchasing Council for the State of Texas by Governor Bill Clements. In retirement he spent many years travelling with his wife and enjoying poker, bridge, golf, creative writing, music and dancing. His last few years were spent full of service, friendships and fun at Treemont Retirement in Dallas, Texas. He will be remembered for his ready jokes, his laughter, his zest for life, love of travel, knack for languages and flair with words. Always the life of the party, Denny touched the lives of many and is beloved by all who knew him. He is survived by his children, Dennis Newton, III and wife Pam, Denise Newton Hall and husband James, and Marianne Newton. Grandchildren Brianna Newton, James Hall, Bradley Newton, Jeffrey Hall, Laurie Newton Wiehe and husband Mark, and Max Smith along with 2 great grandchildren Lily McGee Hall and Emilie Newton Wiehe. Little Emilie was born just a few hours before his death and exactly one month before his birth date bringing a smile to his face in his final hours. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Mary Collins Newton. A memorial service will be held on , 18, 2012 at 7:00 pm at the Treemont Retirement Community, 5550 Harvest Hill Road, Dallas, Texas. Obituary: NEWTON, Coylene Turlington Jul. 19, 1942 - Sep. 21, 2014 We celebrate the life of Coylene Turlington Newton. Coylene was born 19, 1942 and passed away 21, 2014 in the loving presence of her family. Coylene was predeceased by her parents, Coy and Ruby Turlington, and her brother, Culver Turlington. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Bill Newton, her son, Johnny Bohn of Dallas and her daughter, Sharon Bohn Cunningham, son-in-law Michael Cunningham and grandson, Michael Wei Cunningham of Nashville, Tennessee. Also missing Coylene are her stepchildren, Clay Newton of Austin, Scott and wife Margaret of Royal Oak, Michigan, and Paul Newton and wife Jenny of Flagstaff, Arizona and their children, Calvin and Charlie Newton. Coylene grew up in Marshall, Texas and lived an idyllic life with her parents and adored older brother, Culver. Her father Coy, an attorney, was a representative to the Texas legislature from Marshall. In 1958 her family moved to Austin where she graduated from McCallum High School in 1960. She then went to the University of Texas graduating in 3 years, followed by the achievement of a masters degree. In 1964 she married John Bohn and soon became the devoted mother to their two children, Johnny and Sharon. Coylene reveled in her childrens activities, encouraging them in their faith in God, love of life, and appreciation of the arts. She was so proud of them and the fine adults they became. Her adult children were her best friends in later years. In 2005 Coylene married Bill Newton. She and Bill loved their home in Lakeway, enjoying sunsets from their porch, road trips to historical places in charming towns and travels to see the kids. Coylenes professional accomplishments were centered around improving the lives of children. In her early years she taught at Robert E. Lee Elementary and later was a founder and first Executive Director of Camp Fire Girls. She also served as project director of the Texas PTA, developing funding for statewide programs for alcohol and drug abuse, and child abuse prevention. As a lobbyist she advocated on behalf of childrens issues. She held the position of Chief of Client Services of Child Enforcement in the office of the Attorney General, taking pride in strong leadership roles. Her greatest asset was her ability to bring out the skills of others. She was a member of Leadership Austin and Leadership Texas and served on a number of statewide boards. Coylene was laid to rest in the family plot beside her parents in Tatum, Texas following a private graveside service. In her memory, the family suggests memorials to any charity benefitting the welfare of children. |

Obituary: Corene Doris Shamlin Newton, born 7, 1942, in Kerens, Texas. She was the oldest child of nine (9) children born to the parentage of the late Lenard Earl Shamlin and Corene Doris Ponder Shamlin. Doris as she was lovingly called by her family and friends was reared in a great Christian home in Canton, Texas, Van Zandt . She professed her hope in Christ at an early age at the Promise Land C.M.E. Church. Doris received her education from Wynne Elementary School, Canton, Texas and graduated from Cartwright High School, Wills Point, Texas, class of 1961. Shortly after graduation, Doris moved to Dallas, Texas. She was employed as a secretary for Williams Heating and Air Conditioning for many years. On 19, 1964, Doris met and married the love of her life, Lewis Bennett Newton. To this union three beautiful daughters were born: Adrienne, Aretha and Stephanie. Doris united with the Camp Wisdom United Methodist Church and served there faithfully until her health failed. She loved her church and was a dedicated member of the Usher Board, she would often say that "no one could command a church floor as the ushers of Camp Wisdom". Doris had a great love for children. She had a vision of opening a Child to assist working parents. Her vision became a reality and she opened Overton Road Day where she serviced parents from Neely Bryan School, her church and neighborhood. "Mama Doris", as the children called her, loved, cared for and nurtured over a hundred children in a loving home for more than 20 years. On , 5, 2016, Doris slipped away to be with her heavenly Father as she slept. She has joined the loved ones who proceeded her in death: her beloved husband, Lewis Bennett Newton, daughter, Adrienne Elaine Joe; Father Lenard Earl Shamlin, Mother, Corene Ponder Shamlin and Brother, Gerald Shamlin. Corene Doris Shamlin Newton, leaves to cherish her precious memories: two daughters, Aretha Newton and Stephanie (Kenri) Cheatum; son-in-law, John Joe Sr., and three children she raised as her own, Rickey Newton, Kenneth Newton, and Sharon Newton Stone (Melton). She also leaves to share in her memories, step-son, Roderick Gulley (Zinia), step-daughter, Tracey Gulley (Alfonzo Price) 14 grandchildren, and 22 great- grandchildren. Three sisters; Opal Echols (Ollis), Bertha Mosley (Rev. J.R. Mosley Sr.) and Julia Darden(Eddie), Four brothers; Lenard Shamlin Jr. (Shelia), George Chris Shamlin I (Catherine) Lawrence Shamlin Sr. and Barry Shamlin; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
