Charlotte Matthews was born on May 23, 1925 to the parentage of Edward and Charlotte Matthews. She was the second of five children. She accepted Christ at an early age and loved the Lord dearly. Charlotte spent her early childhood years in Montgomery, AL. where she attended public school. On 23, 1947 she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Shedreck Newton. To this union four children were born. Charlotte was a sweet and quiet person. She enjoyed gospel singing and sang in the church choir. See enjoyed her church family as well as spending time with her biological family. Charlotte departed this earthly life on 23, 2014. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and two siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Shirley Pickard, Faye Simien (Shawn), Jackie Lewis (Wardell) and son, George Newton (Alice), sister, Eddie Gregoire, brother, Edward Matthews, Jr., grandsons, Terrence Pickard, Shawn Simien and Shannon Pickard (Courtney), granddaughter, Christon Stewart, grandsons, Jeremiah and Deandre Pickard, great grandson, Deandre Gregoire and niece, Glenda Hill and a host of relatives,, play children, friends and acquaintances. |

Obituary: Charles Wyatt Newton, 50, of Lumberton, passed away 23, 2015. Wyatt was born in Beaumont, TX on 27, 1965 to Luellen and Bob Newton. The newspaper headline on that day read, Astronauts Rocked out to Music as they Float in Space, which is so fitting since Wyatt could tell you the band of any rock song imaginable. He knew them all. While attending BCP High School, he met his best friend and the love of his life, Brenda Lowry. were married 25 years and had three children. As a young teen to the present, he worked at the family hardware store and once a month he enjoyed working at Larrys Trade Days cooking kettle corn. He enjoyed hanging out in his shop with friends, going to his deer lease and hunting. Wyatt is survived by his father Bob Newton; his wife, Brenda Newton; daughter Amanda Retherford and son in law, Jace Retherford; daughter Shelley Newton and son in law, Keith Peschel; son Neale Newton; sister Bonnie Self and her husband Joe; brother Rob Newton and his wife Farah Newton; brother Tabb Johnson and his wife Lisa Johnson and many cousins. He was a devoted husband and loving father. He will be profoundly missed by all. Service will be held 3:00 p.m. , 28, 2015 at Forest Lawn Chapel in Beaumont with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. |

Obituary: Brig. Gen. Dorr E. Newton, Jr. USAF Retired, of San Antonio, died on , 15, 2003. General Newton was born in 1916 in Philadelphia, PA, and attended Fay and St. MarkÂs Schools in Southborough, MA. He graduated from St. MarkÂs in 1934 and went on to Princeton University. a year in the First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry Pennsylvania National Guard, he enlisted as a flying cadet in 1938. A year later he graduated from flying school at Kelly Field, Texas, was rated a pilot, and appointed a second lieutenant in the Air Reserve with active duty from May 1939. He received his regular commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Corps 1, 1940. General NewtonÂs first assignment was as assistant adjutant in the 19th Pursuit Squadron at Wheeler Field, Hawaii. He served in this group for 2 ½ years in normal squadron duties, ending up as squadron commanding officer of the newly activated 44th Pursuit Squadron for a brief period. In 1941 he was assigned to the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at Luke Field, AR, as assistant section commander and in 1942 became a section commander. In 1942 General Newton went overseas to England and North Africa as assistnat A-3 in the newly activated Twelfth Air Force. In 1943 he was appointed executive officer of the Bombardment Training , Northwest African Training Command. In 1943 he was transferred to the 27th Fighter-Bomber Group as deputy group commander just as it entered combat. He assumed command of the 27th Group in 1943 and participated in the Sicilian and Italian campaigns in that capacity. He was made a Colonel in 1943. In 1944 he was appointed assistnat chief of staff, A-3, XII Tactical Air Command, and in 1944, after the Southern France invasion, he was assigned the additional duty of acting deputy commander of XII TAC. In 1945 Gneral Newton was assigned to Directorate of Requirements, Headquarters Army Air Forces, as assistant for Air Forces. In 1946 he was sent to the University of Michigan for a course in Latin American affairs. In 1946 he was ordered to Lima, Peru as assistant chief of the U.S. Air Force Mission to Peru. In 1947 he was appointed chief of the U.S. Air-Force Mission. On return from Peru in 1949, he attended the Armed Forces Staff , Norfolk, VA. He graduated in 1950 and was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force as Chief, Tactical Air Division, Directorate of Requirements, Deputy Chief of Staff, Development. He entered the Air War in 1953, graduated in 1954 and was appointed deputy commender of the Air Force Cambridge Research , Air Research and Development Command, Cambridge, MA. In 1957 he was transferred to Headquarters ARDC as assistant deputy Commander, resources. In 1959 he became assistant vice commander for Headquarters ARDC and that became deputy chief of staff for plans. Joining the Air Force Logistics Command in 1960, the general assumed duty as deputy commander of the San Antonio Area, Kelly Air Force Base, TX. Reassigned 13, 1962 General Newton became deputy chief, Military Planning Office, Southeast Asia Treaty Organiszation with duty station at Bangkok, Thailand. In 1964, he joined the North American Air Defense CommandNORAD in Colorado Springs, and served as the assistant chief of staff until his retirement in 1967. In 1966 he was awarded the Princeton University Class of 1938 Distinguished Service Award. General Newton has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, Commendation Ribbon with oak leaf cluster, the Presidential Unit Citation, the French Croix de Guerre with Palm and Star, and the Peruvian Cruz de Aviacion and pilotÂs wings. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his preparation of the Air Plan for the invasion of Southern France while serving as assistant chief of staff A-3, of XII Tactical Air Command. His oak leaf cluster to the DFC was awarded for the destruction of two ME-109Âs near the Anzio beachhead.. He was patrolling the area with eight A-36Âs when 15 or more MEÂs came down to bomb the invasion forces and was able to break up the enemy formation and destroy two of their aircraft while chasing them home. retiring from the Air Force, General Newton was chief of Protocol for Hemisfair and a consultant for Raytheon Corp. He is preceeded in death by his wife, Karolen Newton. Survived by daughter, Doreen Newton of Philadelphia, PA; son, Howard P. Newton of San Antonio; daughter, Luisa Inez Newton of San Antonio; grandchildren, Christian Hoffman, Roxana Newton, Ansley Newton, and Caroline Newton all of San Antonio; great grandson, Ian Hoffman of San Antonio. |
