Obituary: Brigadier General Kenneth Raynor Newbold, PhD, (Army National Guard, retired) died , 1, from complications related to Parkinsons disease. Dr. Newbold served North Carolina public education for three decades, beginning as a teacher and principal in Wake . Dr. Newbold served as principal in Richmond , principal and assistant superintendent in Sampson , assistant superintendent for Greensboro City Schools. He served as superintendent in Scotland and Greensboro City Schools. In 1989 Dr. Newbold served as interim deputy state superintendent of Public Instruction in North Carolina. During active duty service with the U.S. Army in Korea, Ken attained the rank of staff sergeant with the 31st Infantry, 7th Division. Following his transfer to the U.S. Army Reserve he advanced to the rank of first lieutenant. As Brigadier General, Army National Guard, he served as commander of the 30th Infantry Brigade (mechanized) (Separate]. A lifelong Presbyterian, he was an active member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church in Rose Hill. Ken attended First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington with his parents, Jerry and Jessie. During that time he joined Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. His commitment to education led Ken to teach school in a number of churches throughout his career. He also served as a deacon, elder, and presbytery moderator of the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina. He served for six years at the national level as a member of the General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). A strong supporter of women and children, Ken was made an Honorary Life Member of Presbyterian Women, Inc. A devoted public servant, Ken gave his time to numerous not for profit organizations. Among others he served on the boards of directors of the Duplin Board of Elections (chair), Duplin Library, District 61 State Employees Association, Moores Creek Battlefield Association, Rose Hill Jubilee Inc., and North Carolina Military Historical Society. He served on the Advisory Committee of Tuscarora Boy Scout Council and as chair of the Rose Hill Jubilee (1993 and 1994). Ken is a member of Davidson s R.O.T.C. Hall of Fame and a recipient of awards that include Lions Club Internationals Distinguished Service Award, the U.S. Army Legion of Merit, Calvin Wiley Educator of the Year, Army Commendation Medal, Boy Scouts of Americas Silver Beaver Award, North Carolinas Personnel and Guidance Association Administrator of the Year (1978), and Eagle Scout with six palms. Ken is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ellen (nee Sheffield), his son Joe (Amy) and daughter Lisa (Jeff), grandson Drew; sisters Caroline Swails, Jessie Kennedy, and Ann Perkins Newbold and his brother Jerry, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his twin brother Harper. In lieu of flowers, Ken and the family request donations in memory of Ken Newbold to any of the following:

Obituary: Emma Lee Norton Watkins Newberry was born 10, 1918 in Laurinburg, N.
C. to Grady and Lila Norton. She was a beloved woman known fondly as
mother, mom, Grandma Dee, Dee Dee to her family, and Lee to many of her
friends. She was employed by St. Joseph Hospital for 24 years as nurse.
She had a hard working, compassionate heart as a nurse and as a mother,
raising 4 children after the death of her husband, John Wilbert Watkins.
True grit, determination, strength, and fierce independence were also
attributes that described Emma. She was a long time member of Bethesda
Presbyterian Church.* *She is preceded in death by her parents, 5 siblings, youngest son, Robert
Norton Watkins (Susanne Watkins Vecchio) and her second husband Charlie E.
Newberry. She is survived by her children John Wilbert Watkins, Jr.
(Elaine), Charles Edward Watkins (Norma), Brenda Watkins Williams (Ricky)
and 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.* *Emma loved to travel, especially with her sister Mabel and her husband
Archie. Together they traveled the 48 contiguous states. She was an avid
pier fisherman and loved Long Beach. She also enjoyed playing gin rummy,
bingo and lottery scratch off tickets. Shopping, working puzzles and
reading were other favorite pastimes. Emma was very particular about how
she looked and never a day went by without her hair just so, lipstick and
her favorite jewelry on and TicTacs in her purse. * *She has blessed us all with 97 years of love that only a mother,
grandmother, great grandmother can provide and will be greatly missed.* * services will be 10:00 AM at Powell chapel
with the Rev. Ray Mims officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope

Pearl Newbern of Williamston passed away morning, 15th at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Cecil Newbern and Willie Martin White Newbern, and her siblings, John C. Newbern Jr., David Lawrence (Bro) Newbern, and Bess Newbern Coffee.
She is survived by her nephew John C. Newbern III, nieces Martin L. Coffee and Jane Coffee Evans, and great nieces and nephews.
Pearl was born 5, 1927 in Kelford, NC. She was a long-time resident of Williamston and graduated from Williamston High School. She graduated from Berea in Kentucky in 1950 and returned to Williamston to work. She worked for Martin Social Services for 35 years as social worker and supervisor. Pearl was a founding member and stalwart of New Hope Baptist Chapel. Pearl was a strong, independently-minded woman, a foundation to her family. Pearl pursued a lifetime love of learning.
Visitation will be evening 17 6PM to 8PM at Biggs . Service will be held 17, 11AM at Biggs with burial immediately following at Woodlawn Cemetary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pearls memory to New Hope Baptist Chapel, a Baptist mission, the Williamston Rescue Squad, or charity of your choice.
