Obituary: Mariko Nagami, born on May 21, 1938 in Japan, died, , 1, 2015 at home in Woodside. She is survived by her daughter Yoko, her granddaughter Helena and her son-in-law David Rosasco. Her death was not unlike the early stages of her life, having grown up as a young girl during World War II, her father evacuating her and her mother and sibling to Hokkaido to avoid starvation and daily bombardments of Tokyo towards the end of the war. Her mother died just a few days before 15, 1945 from starvation. the war, Mariko was placed in a French-Canadian Catholic nunnery for orphans of the war, residing there for 7 years until her father, who survived the war, came to recover her. Mariko spent most of her adult life as a registered nurse in the town of Toro, Omiya City, Saitama Prefecture, working long hours, suffering many indignities due to harassments and abandonment by people she trusted would be there for her. Despite her 4'9" frame, a direct result of malnutrition during the war, Mariko was a woman of such energy, who never sat still, and, as a single working mother in Japan during the 1960's, was a rare example at that time in her country, one where divorce was unknown, regardless of circumstance. Her oldest daughter, Yoko, married David, an American from Woodside, a fact that would change all their lives. Mariko always accepted her son-in-law, he himself would go on to live and work in Japan during his younger days for 12 years, in an attempt to prove to her that he would be a better son-in-law than any Japanese man. Mariko was David's first teacher, first friend, first of everything as he adjusted to the different and complex culture and language of Japan. It was the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11, 2011 at 2:46 pm which brought Mariko and David, who was caring for her at the time in Japan, to Woodside after the U.S. government all non-essential Americans out of Japan. Mariko suffered for the remaining years in Woodside with corticobasal degeneration, very rare and debilitating neurological disease within the Parkinsonian disease group, which gradually attacks multiple parts of the brain, causing all muscles in the body to malfunction and become rigid, a disease which eventually led to a variety of symptoms and the primary causes of her death at at 77. It was her ferocious will and the care provided to her by Yoko, Helena and David that permitted her to live a quality life until the end, as this was an honor for them, the same honor she afforded others. Her suffering in her last few months, being unable to speak or eat or drink appropriately, to walk or move from her bed did not affect the part of the brain that controls understanding, and, even to the end, her nods and movements of her left hand or eyebrows signalled that there was a spirit named Mariko still there, still just as sharp. Mariko loved Japanese baseball, TV dramas, going to the local department stores in Japan, all of it simple living, as she lived alone for many years of her life with no one to stand with her, no one to talk to, no one to fight on her behalf. God, in his mercy and wisdom, places people together in situations, allows good and noble men and women to emerge at just the right moment. Mariko was witness to many of these miracles during her 5 years in Woodside, with great men of faith visiting her, praying for her, anointing her, comforting her, all because Woodside is blessed to have such people still in its midst. Though raised in a Catholic nunnery, these ministers spanned most of the great Abrahamic faiths, from Pastor Joseph Mantovani of St. Jacobus Evangelical Lutheran Church, to John Raymond Gernarde as a Born-Again Baptist, to the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who almost daily visited her home, the hospital and were there at the moment of her death, and Samsudeen Ismail, a Sunni Muslim man of powerful faith who prayed alone for her healing in her hospital room many nights in the month leading up to her death. These blessings are a gift from Providence that assures she was not abandoned, and will find herself in His presence. For that, there is no doubt. Mariko, in the end, was worth more to her family than all of the kings of the earth, all of the learned and the wise, and will be remembered for her fight for life surrounded by the very best Woodside, and indeed America has to offer. -- -- |
