Obituary: Each , memories of the frozen battlefields of Bastonge, Belgium are rekindled for Sugarmill Woods resident Juell Jack Ness who participated in the epic Battle of the Bulge in 1944. The seventh of eleven children of Norwegian immigrants, Ness was born and raised in Summit, South Dakota graduating from Summit High School in 1940 as class valedictorian. Upon completing Nettleton Commercial in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he was employed as a bookkeeper at the Northwest Security National Bank in Sioux Falls and then as a teller for the First National Bank of Nevada in Las Vegas. Ness banking career was placed on hold in 1943 when he requested his draft board to accelerate his induction into the U.S. Army. completing basic training at Ft. Lewis, Washington, Ness was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP), first attending the University of Idaho and then the University of Oregon. His studies were halted in 1944 when the ASTP was discontinued to meet the manpower demands for the coming invasion of Hitlers Europe. Assigned to the 55th Armored Infantry Battalion, 11th Armored Division, Ness underwent advanced infantry training at Camp Cooke, California. In 1944, Ness division departed from New York City for Southhampton, England where it continued its training until deploying to Cherbourg, France in early 1944. Shortly thereafter, Hitler launched a surprised counteroffensive under the cover of historically bad weather conditions in a desperate attempt to divide the Allied forces. With Allied forces forced to retreat, a bulge in their lines resulted in the Germans surrounding the 101st Airborne Division at the Belgium town of Bastogne. Nesss division made a 350 mile, three day mounted dash across France to join General Pattons Third Army as part of the breakthrough force that relieved beleaguered American troops at Bastogne on Christmas Day. As a scout assigned to C, 55th Armored Infantry Battalions, Ness earned his Purple Heart on New Years Eve, 1944, six miles west of Bastogne during a day of bitter fighting against a German force defending a small village. While moving dismounted through heavily forested terrain, Ness escaped injury when enemy landmines killed one comrade and wounded several others. Ness continued to escape injury during his battalions rout of the German defenders despite his company suffering 19 killed and 27 wounded. However, Ness good fortunate ended when the Germans launched a determined counterattack with tanks and infantry. With withering machinegun fire from an enemy Tiger tank streaming at him, Ness literally felt the heat of the tracer rounds on his face. One round miraculously passed through the top of his field jacket only to seriously wound a fellow scout behind him. However, another round finally found its mark as it tore into Ness lower right leg. A long medical journey followed for Ness that took him from his battalions aid station to a five month hospital stay in England to more months of rehabilitation at Vancouver Barracks, Washington and finally Ft. Custer, Michigan. The proud recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge, Ness was discharged from the Army on 29, 1945, returning to Sioux Falls where he enrolled in ana . In 1947, he transferred to George Washington University where he completed his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Government. a brief stint with the Army Map Service in Washington, D.C., he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1950 as a Special Agent. Following a year in the FBIs Mobile, Alabama office, he was transferred to the New York City office where he remained until his retirement in 1975. While with the New York City office, Ness served in its Counter Intelligence Division. As the Supervisor of the Soviet Espionage Squad, Ness supervised many of the FBIs major Soviet espionage cases, earning many incentive and merit awards along with several commendation letters from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. In his retirement, Ness has enjoyed refinishing furniture, golfing and traveling. He and his wife of 53 years, Joan, have traveled to the four corners of the United States, parts of Canada and Europe with visits to Bastogne and surrounding battle sites, as well as a three day trip to the Normandy beaches. also enjoy visiting their son, daughter and granddaughter whenever possible. Since relocating from Long Island, New York to Sugarmill Woods in 1990, Ness has been active with his church, Nature Coast Chapter of Ex-FBI Agents, West Citrus Elks, Sugarmill Woods Country Club and Sugarmill Woods Crime Watch. He is a Life Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) and Disabled American Veterans. |

Obituary: Joan Margaret Ness, age 85, passed away on , May 13, 2015 in a Sugarmill Woods home she had shared with her son (Larry) since her beloved husband of more than 62 years (Jack) passed away on 11 of 2014. She died peacefully under the loving care of her son, two special care-givers Jess and Mary, a handful of close friends plus the wonderful people at Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast. Joan was born in Queens, New York to Anna and Frank Zigmund, on 17, 1929. She had two older brothers, Harold and Frank Buddy, whose youthful hockey exploits left Joan a hockey fan for life. She was a true gift to her mother, as Joans father was a traveling dry goods salesman and was typically away all week, leaving the two girlfriends home alone. Joans mother taught her to bowl, a passion she followed into her 20s and 30s. Joan was working for American Airlines when she met her future husband Juell Jack Ness at a Christmas party in of 1951. Jack, one of 11 children born to Norwegian immigrants the Reverend C.O.B. and Karen Ness in 1923, had just recently arrived in New York from Alabama. Jack served in WW II (was injured at the Battle of Bulge, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star) and entered the FBI after getting a Masters degree at George Washington. The small town boy from Summit, South Dakota (Jack liked to brag that he never had indoor plumbing until he went away to college), made quite an impression on the ig city girl. became engaged early in 1952 and were married on 21, 1952. Joan gave birth to son Larry in 1953 and daughter Karin in 1956. Tragically, Joans mother passed away in of 1961 and her father moved in with Joan and Jack, as well as their two children. Joan and Jack were active members of their church (Grace Lutheran in Queens Village, N.Y.) through the years and it became the center of their lives. The friends they met there stayed with them the rest of their lives. Joan was a typical 1950s and 60s wife and mother, staying at home to raise the kids while Jack worked. As her children grew slightly older, Joan would take a job as a secretary at Island Realty on Long Island, a commercial real estate company. She loved the work and remained there on and off for nearly 20 years. Joans father passed away in the summer of 1974 and a little more than a year later, Jack retired ( of 1975) from his 25-year career with the FBI. Friends could not believe he intense Jack would ever be able to stay retired but Joan had other ideas. Son Larry had left for college in 1971 and except for a brief two-year period in the early 1980s, lived away from them in Florida, Las Vegas and California. Daughter Karin remained home until getting married in 1980 but from Jacks retirement in 1975 on, Joan and Jack were all about watching their beloved NY Islanders (the team won four straight Stanley Cups while they were season-ticket holders) and seeing the US of A. Joan loved to tell anyone who would listen that she had visited every state except Hawaii, mostly in one of the couples numerous RVs or motor homes. Long before there was such a thing as GPS, Joan would navigate (aided by her trustworthy Rand-McNally map) and Jack would drive. The couple criss-crossed the country visiting countless friends and family along the way. Both were huge history buffs and there were few places (if any) they wanted to see, that they eventually didn . Joans first and only grandchild (Kati) was born in 1983 and as one would expect, the couple doted on her. Joan and Jack continued to travel and as soon as Kati was able, she accompanied them on many of their trips. Joan and Jack left New York in 1990 and built a house in Homosassas Sugarmill Woods. continued to travel, visiting their son Larry at least once a year in Las Vegas, a place they came to really love. When Larry moved to California, although Joan was positive he big one was only awaiting her arrival to hit, she faithfully would visit her son at least once a year. Daughter Karin lived in New Orleans for a short time right after she got married but shortly relocated to Tampa, until moving to Atlanta in 1996. Joan and Jack spent a lot of time with their daughter and granddaughter plus Larry often joined the family (in Florida) on the holidays. The move to Sugarmill brought a whole new circle of friends, as Joan and Jack again became a big part of their church plus involved themselves in countless activities, while also maintaining a busy travel schedule. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Southern Woods CC and shortly after that, took a memorable trip to Europe. The most moving part of that trip was their return to the site of the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, where a local guide was able to find almost the exact spot where Jack had been wounded, back on Dec 31, 1944. Talk about he circle of life. Joan was an avid card player and as noted, she and Jack (as always), found themselves surrounded by great friends. Joan always said that her favorite home was the one in Sugarmill Woods and she never quite got over having to leave it in 2011, to move into an assisted living facility. When Jack died in the summer of 2014, Joans son Larry knew how hard it was going to be for her without Jack and since he could work from home, the perfect solution was for mother and son to become roommates back in Sugarmill Woods. continued... |
