Obituary: ELSIE MEADE MENAN 1919 - 2015 Former Black Hawk resident Elsie Menan died 10, 2015, at Spring Ridge Park Assisted Living for Memory where she had lived for two and a half years. She was 96 years 7 months and 3 days old. She, her husband, Oliver, and daughters Nancy and Karen, moved to 101 ant Street in 1961. Oliver died in 1972 and both daughters had left home, she sold her home on ant and moved to the bottom of the hill, 187 Clear Creek, her home until 2006. Born 7, 1919 in Yuma Colorado, her family farmed and proved a homestead just across the line in Washington . Her parents, John Meade and Jennie (Bruce) Meade moved there in 1910 and were raising their children, Mike and Peggy. John died in the 191 flu epidemic twelve days before his daughter, Elsie was born. Jennie, with the help of her father, John Bruce and brother, Ray continued to farm until the early 1930s when she sold it and moved her family to Yuma. The Elsie attended school graduating as a Salutatorian, Class of 37. Elsie worked as a maid while she attended the University of Denver on a scholarship but eventually had to give it up when she went to work for the IRS in Washington, DC. She was a volunteer aircraft spotter during her stay in Washington. In she was returning to Denver, but at a stop on Cheyenne was met by the love of her life - Oliver Warren Menan. were married by a Justice of the Peace in Cheyenne on 6, 1941 and returned to Denver. Two daughters were born of this union: Nancy V. and Karen Lynn. Elsie went to work for the Army Air Force at Buckley Field but soon decided that being a wife and mother were more important at the time. For several years she worked summers in Central Citys gift shops. Upon Olivers death, she needed a full-time job. She answered an ad in the Weekly Register Call for a deputy / dispatcher in the Gilpin Sheriffs Office and began working there the following week. She retired from the position in 1981. Flowers were a great love and she raised gorgeous hollyhocks, delphinium and a host of other colorful flowers. When her neighbor and dear friend, Kathryn Eccker, died, there were no near neighbors and was awfully lonely. She listed her little house for sale on a and the following she collected a check for it. She moved to her daughter, Nancys, home in Golden, Colorado where she continued raising her beautiful flowers and helping others until Alzheimers took her beautiful mind and loving, caring spirit. Survivors besides Nancy, include nephews Don (Jan) Meade of Okemos, MI., Dave (Sue) of TyTy, GA., and cousin, Donna Lee Grenfell of Loveland, CO. Burial was at Dory Hill with Black Hawk blue sky, warm sunshine and pristine white snow. Rest in peace dear Mother and best friend. |
