Obituary: Palma Jean Monk 30, 1923 - 1, 2016 Palma Jean Monk was born in Glenwood, Iowa, the last of 3 children to Ralph Linville and Alice Linville (nee Kupka). Her father was a decorated World War I veteran and mayor of the town, her mother was the daughter of Czech immigrants. Palma Jean's early childhood was blessed with comfort and security and the love of many relatives who lived close by. It therefore was a shock when the stock market crash of 1929 wiped out her family's financial resources. During the Great Depression her family had to move in with relatives in Crete, Nebraska, and then at the end of her freshman year in high school, move to San Bernadino, California. There she excelled in high school, ran on the track team and won a scholarship to study English at the University of California at Davis. She loved college, but by the end of her freshman year UC Davis had been closed for World War II. She found a job at an airbase in Sacramento where she met Morton Kent Hoerster, an Air Force navigator whose plane was shot down and crashed into the English Channel, leading to an invitation to eat dinner with the King of England (in later years she would remind her children to use better table manners should they too ever have that privilege). M.K. and Palma Jean were married in San Antonio, Texas and lived in Austin, Texas with her first child, John Kent Hoerster. divorcing, Palma Jean moved back to Houston to be closer to her parents. She found work at McCormick Steel, rapidly rising in the ranks to become their only female credit manager; at that time she began using her initials "P.J." on all correspondence so that customers would not realize she was a woman. She was very successful in that position and was promoted to office manager of the companys Lubbock, Texas office. In 1951, while living in Lubbock, she met Gilbert Coleman Monk, a veteran of World War II. a six week whirlwind romance, the couple eloped to Clovis, New Mexico. Soon afterwards they moved to Houston and, after working as a lead carpenter and draftsman, Gilbert and P.J. started a successful construction business, building high-end homes. Their first son, Thomas Ralph Monk was born in Houston. In 1955 the family moved to Castro Valley, California where their last child, Michael Ellis Monk was born. Gilbert sold construction supplies, scaffolding and cranes for large projects such as hydroelectric dams, requiring the family to move often between the Bay Area of California and the Seattle area. Palma Jean managed the family finances and household with grace through all those moves, but was glad when they finally settled in Issaquah in 1968, building a house where the lived until 2010. In 1972, after Tom left for college, Palma Jean decided that she wanted to complete her college education, so at age 49 she enrolled at Bellevue Community , then transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle where she graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was accepted into the Graduate School of Social Work at the UW where again she earned straight A's. She then worked as a psychiatric social worker at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma for 13 years and afterwards opened her own private counseling practice in Issaquah. She was able to bring all of her hard-won experience to bear in her clinical practice and was known for her ability to get to the root of issues, especially those leading to chronic disability, and to help people reclaim their lives, as she had done herself on more than one occasion. In retirement she loved to play bridge with friends and to travel with her sons. Gilbert and she walked every day and were charter members of the Bellevue Athletic Club where she loved swimming laps in the pool. She learned to cross-country ski, rode bikes and played tennis until she was almost 80. Her optimism never faded even as her health slowly began to fade during her 80's. Gilbert and she moved to an apartment in The Gardens in Bellevue in 2010. Sadly, Gilbert passed away shortly after their 60th wedding anniversary, leaving her to face the future without him. Still, she remained alert and, after moving to Serenity House, spent her time reading, watching news and special programs on television and keeping up with current political events. Just five days before she peacefully passed away at age 93, she watched with delight as Hilary Clinton accepted the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States. She was so proud and glad to have lived long enough to see a world where her granddaughters could have thriving careers and never have to use their initials to hide their gender. She will be greatly missed by her sons John, Tom and Mike, by their wives Carol, Cinda and Angie, by her six grandchildren Kate, Ben, Brian, Scott, Tracy and Ann, and by her great grandchildren Charlie, Rose and Evan. The family held a private memorial service on 28. Remembrances may be made to Group Foundation. |
