Obituary: James F. (Frank) Maloney, Sr. died of natural causes at Providence Hospital in Centralia, Washington on 23, 2011. He was born on 3, 1918 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of the late Patrick and Catherine Maloney. He had four siblings; Larry, Marian, Kay and Sarah. He attended Judd Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City. Upon graduation from high school Frank attended the University of Portland (Oregon) on a sports scholarship where he starred as a football player and was also a pitcher on the baseball team. During his senior year he was selected to a National Collegiate Football all-star team. He was considered one of the best punters and drop kickers in the country. The New York Giants Professional Football team drafted him and offered him a contract to play for them but he never joined the team. He graduated from the university with a BA in Business. He married Elizabeth Marie Payne in San Francisco, California on 19, 1941. He had originally met Betty in Portland while attending college. During WWII he served several years in the United States Navy and was released from duty on 9, 1945. his release from the Navy he began working for the Standard Oil of California as accountant where he originally worked in Portland. In the 1960s he was transferred to Seattle. Instead of accepting a transfer to California with the company in 1971 he decided to remain in Washington State. He then worked as an auditor for Snohomish until he retired in of 1981. Upon retiring he and Betty moved to the Washington coast (near Moclips) where he lived on the beach until 1992. In 1992 they moved to the Chehalis area where he resided at the time of his death. Frank loved landscaping his property no matter where he lived and would spend countless hours getting it just right. He loved to watch sports on TV and was a huge but often disappointed fan of both the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners. But if it were any type of sport and on TV he would try to watch it. Many times he would have one game on TV and another on the tube. As he sat there watching it wasn beyond him to tell them how it should be done if the team wanted to win. He loved to play checkers and stood undefeated among his immediate family members for all those years until he reached the age of 92 or 93. It was only then that a niece was able to take him down because at times he could not recall if his were the black or the red checkers. Frank is survived by his son Jim Maloney of Hoquiam, Wa., son and daughter-in-law Pat and Becki Maloney of Onalaska, Wa.; grandchildren Regan Maloney of Seattle, Wa., Chris Maloney of Onalaska, Wa., Todd Maloney of Maple Valley, Wa.,Troy Maloney of Pacific, Wa., Ryan Maloney of Seattle, Sean Maloney of San Francisco, Ca.; and sister Kay of Los Gatos, Ca. Mr. Maloney was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; son Larry; infant son Dennis; brother Larry and sisters Sarah and Marian. A Mass was held on 30, 2001 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Chehalis. Burial took place at the Saint Francis in Toledo, Wa. under the direction of Sticklin Chapel, Centralia, WA. |
