Obituary: Malkowski 6/29/28 - 2/24/2016 written by: Judy, Ervin & Donald Our mom, , was the second of four children born to Ervin and Laura Langley on 29, 1928 in Hackberry Kansas. Grandpa was a farm worker and not just he, but the whole family was caught up in the great depression of 1929 and the drought and soil erosion of the 1930's. The infamous "Dust Bowl" caused the family to migrate to the wild west mining town of Mountain City, Nevada in 1936. Grandma's sister, Aunt Ester Wilson had a boarding house for the workers employed by the copper mine and she let Grandma and Grandpa know that if they moved to Mountain City she would find work for them, which she did. Life in Kansas was poor and hard. Mom used to say that Kansas was a good place to be from and if she was asked where she was from her answer was usually "East of the mountains". Things got a lot better when the family moved to Mountain City. Mom talked about growing up there working in the boarding house, playing with her Wilson cousins, swimming in Eagle Hole on the Owyhee River and knocking over outhouses on Halloween. She used to brag to us that she was the salutatorian of her 8th grade graduation class. That sounded very impressive until we found out that there were only three in her whole class. The family moved to Bremerton in 1942 when mom was 14. The war was on and the shipyard was hiring workers by the thousands. Mom attended school in Bremerton. Grandpa worked in the shipyard for awhile and quit because of a disagreement. Grandma was not happy with him. He started selling insurance with the business name Langley Insurance Agency in 1943. When the Thanksgiving holiday came in 1943 there were a lot of servicemen in town. My dad was one of them, stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise that was in Bremerton for repair. A common practice back then was to invite servicemen into your home for special occasions and holidays. Grandpa invited three sailors for the Thanksgiving holiday and one of them was Mike Malkowski. Mike was a real cute sailor with black curly hair and was a farm boy from the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. He was also 8 years older than Mom. Mike had had an accident aboard ship and had broken both of his wrists. Mom thought he needed special attention and volunteered to hand feed him. That started their relationship that led to them marrying on 26, 1946. Dad started working in the shipyard after his discharge from the navy. Dad and Mom purchased their first house on eleventh street in Bremerton just two houses away from Grandma and Grandpa. became the proud parents of Judy, born in 1947, Ervin, born in 1948 and Donald, born in 1949. Mom got a job as a night shift waitress at a restaurant. Dad was working days in the shipyard. Between the two work schedules they did a good job of caring for us kids. Their first car was a 1948 Plymouth Deluxe and dad would load us in the car and drive to pick mom up at work every night. Mom and dad both worked very hard and were determined to build a good life for their children and give them all the good things in life and opportunities that they never had. In 1953 they purchased and moved the family to an old house on Bremerton Blvd., in Navy Yard City that needed a lot of work. The home was heated with an old wood stove and that year they had a chimney fire. Dad became friends with the firemen and the next thing we knew he had joined the Navy Yard City Volunteer Fire Department and Mom became a member of the Auxiliary. Mom and dad were getting involved in the community. Through our school mom became a room mother baking cookies and cupcakes for special occasions and got involved with PTA. She earned the Golden Acorn Award and continued to be involved in PTA all the way through our high school years. When the boys were old enough to join cub scouts mom became a den mother. Mom was very hands on building and making things with her cubs. She had a great sense of humor and liked to write her own skits and stories. Judy got involved with the Girl Scouts and mom also became an assistant leader. Mom was a very good seamstress and taught the girls to sew. She also made a lot of our clothes as well as her own. Mom and dad wanted us to learn how to swim. Mom spent a lot of time at the YMCA making sure that we learned how. She did all of this while she also worked outside of the home. When we were in elementary school she started cooking nights in restaurants. She cooked at the Sportsman and Olympic. She used to bring home rare steak sandwiches and turned us onto some of the finer things in life, like Bleu Cheese Dressing. Mom was an excellent cook and we all learned to cook from her. She used to start our dinner in the morning after we went to school and before she went to work and then she would call us up after school and tell us what to do to have dinner ready for dad when he got home from work. Mom loved music and dancing. She always had a radio on in the kitchen. She played Old Country Western music that she loved to listen to. It reminded her of her old days in Mountain City. She also played the big band music from the 1940's that she loved to dance to. We as kids grew up learning the words to many of these songs. From her days in Mountain City she learned continued... |
