Obituary: Clinton Lauren Maehl was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he met and married the love of his life, Gertrude Mofle. Last year they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, and even at the end of his life Clinton talked about how wonderful she is and how lucky he was to find her. In 1942 they headed west to Seattle to join Clintons parents Louis and Laura, and his sisters Jean, Darlene, Delores and Joyce. That same year he bought property in north Seattle, (now Shoreline) and began building their first home, board by board, as money permitted. Clinton was drafted into the Army Signal Corps in 1943 and shipped out on a troop carrier, bound for Berkshire, England, and participated in the battle of Omaha Beach, and the battle for Europe. On 19th 1945, he boarded a troop ship for home. As we sailed into New York Harbor the first thing you saw was the lady with the torch. Every ship in the harbor was blowing its horn. On the deck the transport there were thousands of battle-hardened soldiers crying like babies. This was one of the most emotional experiences of my life, (from Clintons autobiography). He returned home to Gertrude and their two-and-a-half year old daughter Jill. There were two more children to follow: Anita and Douglas. A couple of months after returning, an event occurred hat would set the course for the next forty years, when the Chief of the Seattle Fire District #5 invited him to become a volunteer firefighter. In the summer of 1947, he joined the North City Volunteer Firefighters, a group still in its infancy, and was quickly promoted to Captain and Training Officer. It turned out that he was an excellent teacher, and in 1958 he was invited to become a member of the Fire Service Training for Washington State. In 1950, at the age of 28, he was promoted to Fire Chief of King Fire District #4 and began building a network of firefighters and paramedics that today we know to be a first class organization. I like to think that a little divine guidance steered me to the fire service. It was a very satisfying career and I feel that I made a difference in my community and the state. In 1962 he became a charter member of the Shoreline Rotary Club and in of 1963 was installed as the clubs second president. This involvement greatly enriched his life, and Rotarys dedication to the eradication of polio was a passion for him. He was committed to the principle of the perfect weekly attendance, and for forty years, no matter where in the country he was, he found a meeting to attend. Clinton is survived by his beloved wife Gertrude C. Maehl, his daughters, Jill M. Hanson (James) of Salem OR and Anita L. Belceto (John) of Fall City WA and his son Douglas R. Maehl (Marilyn) of Columbus OH and his sister Joyce E. Anderson of Seattle, WA, eight grandchildren: Mark, Doug, Greg, Diana, Brian, Trevor, Kevin, Kelly and thirteen great grandchildren. He will be missed terribly by his family, friend and the community His service will be at Acacia , 14951 Bothell Way NE, Seattle, WA 98155 on , May 12, 2012 at 1:00 pm. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shoreline Fire Department 17525 Aurora Avenue, Shoreline, WA 98133 |
