Obituary: Missaghullah Maani Mr. Missaghullah Maani, was born in 1920 in a Bahai family in Mashhad, Iran. He was born in the year that Abdul-Baha, the of the Covenant, ascended to the Abha Kingdom. His parents changed his birth name to Missagh - which in Arabic and Farsi means covenant, or commitment. Missagh was the eldest of eight brothers. When he was three years old, his parents moved to Ashkhabad in Russia. Missagh spent his childhood years in Ashkhabad and later in Alma-Ata, Russia. His family returned to Mashhad shortly after the Bolshevik revolution when he was nine years old. Missagh quickly became known as a distinguished student with high academic achievements. He finished at the top of his high school class in Mashhad and received a scholarship to study at the newly established Faculty of Science in Tehran. He earned two Masters Degrees in Physics and Chemistry and started his teaching career in Tehran. At the age of 25, he married his beloved wife Ms. Shahin-dokht Haddad. The Haddads were a prominent family known for establishing the heavy metal industry in Iran and contributing to the industrial development of the country at the time of Reza Shah; for their courage in teaching the Faith; and for their dedication and generosity in providing industrial training to many new Bahais who eventually pioneered to other parts of the world. Shahin-dokht and Missagh had a lasting union for 70 years. He was an active member of the Bahai community and served on several local and national Bahai institutions. Missagh devoted his professional life to teaching in prominent schools in Tehran and eventually concentrated his work at Alborz High School. Alborz was a distinguished academic institution established by American missionaries and was originally known as the American . Later, it was renamed Alborz High School and maintained the highest standards of academic excellence in the country. Missagh taught physics at Alborz and was the director of the Physics Laboratory there. He was the first lecturer to teach science on Iranian National Television. He educated several thousands of students, many of whom went on to become leaders in scientific and academic fields and to hold prominent positions in Iran, North America and Europe. Several of his students maintained their contact with him up until the end of his life. Mr. and Mrs. Maani migrated to the US in 1975 and resided in Champaign Illinois, Southern California, and the Seattle area for the last 40 years. Mr. Maani took his flight to the Abha Kingdom on 23, 2015 in Bellevue Washington. He was survived by his wife, three children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. |
