Obituary: On , 24, 2015, God extended His almighty hand of love and gently took Vernon E. McDowney, Sr., to a home of joy, peace and happiness. Button, as he was graciously known by his family and friends, was born on 11, 1956 Louise West McDowney and the late Westly McDowney in Colonial Beach, VA. He received education in the Westmoreland Public Schools. He acknowledged and accepted Jesus Christ as his creator and savior at an early age and joined Macedonia Baptist Church during the pastorate of the late Rev. R.E. Cabbell. He was ordained as a Deacon on May 13, 2003 under the pastorate of Rev. W.I. Roane. He was a very devoted member always eager to be in the house of the Lord. Always testifying about the Goodness of the Lord. He loved the Lord and the Lord blessed him because he blessed others. He will truly be missed by all who know and loved him. He had a passion for landscaping, making sure the vehicles were sparkling clean and maintenance was well maintained. His most enjoyable times was spent with his family, spending quality time with his mother at the dinner table eating his favorite chicken and wings smothered in gravy, bonding time he spent with his grandson ZyKahri whom he often referred to as his Buddy, and traveling to his In-Laws house every after church for family gatherings. Vernon was a diehard redskins fan. Win or lose his loyalty for his team was 100% redskins as he would always say. Even when they lost he would throw his hat across the room but still a redskin fan. Obituary: Standley Rayfield McDowney, Sr., better known as Ray, was born in King George on 9, 1937 to the late Deacon Earnest Andrew and Deaconess Mary Emma Lomax McDowney, one of twelve children. Losing his battle to cancer, he departed this life early morning 4, 2014 at Westmoreland Rehabilitation , Colonial Beach, Virginia, surrounded by his wife of 53 years and siblings. He attended public schools in King George , Virginia. As a child growing up, Ray accepted Christ, was baptized and united with Good Hope Baptist Church where he received his religious training reinforcing his home training. On 17, 1961 he was joined in Holy Matrimony to Lola Otelia Ashton. This union was blessed with one son, Standley, Jr. The couple settled in the Washington Metropolitan area where they lived for thirty three years. a brief stint at Frank Joy Construction , Ray gained employment at Potomac Electric Power (PEPCO). 35 years at PEPCO, he retired and relocated back to King George , Virginia. He then reunited with Good Hope Baptist Church and served with the Senior Ushers Ministry. Ray was a charter member of the King George Mill Mens Organization. Ray was a workaholic. He enjoyed a delicacy of wild animals, spending time in his vegetable garden and consuming his wifes home cooked meals. Ray said what he thought and meant and did not allow others to change his mind. HE ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WAS RIGHT. He was predeceased by his parents; his son; his brothers, James Henry and Andrew; sisters, Lillian, Viola and Leona; and foster sister, Bessie. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands now rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Lola Otelia Ashton McDowney was born 20, 1942 in Westmoreland , VA. She departed this life on , 13, 2015 at VCUs Critical Hospital in Richmond, VA. She was the only daughter of the late William Harvey Ashton and Bettie Reed Ashton, and was call Sis. Friends later called her O.T. Growing up with four brothers, she became very tough and aggressive; but enjoyed playing jokes on them. Lola attended school in Westmoreland , graduating with the class of 1961 at the now defunct A.T. Johnson High School. At an early age, she accepted Christ, was baptized and united with the Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. George Kelsey. She was actively involved; attending school and worship services. On 17, 1961, shortly after finishing high school, Lola was joined in Holy Matrimony to Standley Rayfield McDowney, Sr. This union was blessed with one son, Standley, Jr. who preceded her in death (2007). The couple settled in the Washington Metropolitan area where they lived for thirty three years. She was employed by the District of Columbia Government as an Accounting Technician in the Department of Employment Services. Lola loved living in the Metropolitan area; but after her husband retired from PEPCO, the relocated to his native King George . Lola commuted to her job until she retired on 3, 2005. Living in King George, she united with Good Hope Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Ronald Dunaway. She was a dedicated member of the Flower and Beautification Ministry, serving as vice president, the Scholarship Committee and the Womans Ministry. She remained faithful even though her health began to decline in 2014 and her husband entered into eternal rest in 2014. Lola was a feisty lady who did not hesitate in telling others what she thought. She loved nice things and always wanted to look her best when she went outside the home. Her hair had to be styled perfectly. She always said, I don want anything that looks cheap. She would sometimes say, Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets. Shopping was a favorite pastime, especially at Macys. Her favorite food was seafood and she enjoyed eating it at the Red Lobster restaurants. As her health changed in recent months and limited her mobility, she enjoyed sitting on her porch or her couch and watching the cars go by. She told her brother-in-law Jimmy and nephew Kenney, get rid of those trees so I can see the road. Whatever came up, she always said, Fermon will take care of it for me. Since her other brothers, Waldolph, Avon and Elvin predeceased her, she would sometimes just say, contact my brother. She seemed to delight in telling others what to do and the smile, as if to say, I know you are going to do what I said. Obituary: Roger Lee McDowell, 69, of Monroe passed away , 7, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Sylvia Henderson McDowell. Born 30, 1945, in Clifton Forge, he was the son of the late James Sanford McDowell and the late Sarah Madeline Powell McDowell. Roger was a retired welder for Greif Brothers , a proud member of Big Island Hunt Club, and he was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church. Roger was a loving son, husband, daddy, brother, and PaPa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a friend to everyone. Roger also served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps. In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by one brother, Johnny McDowell. In addition to his wife, Roger is survived by his children Tammy Baker and her husband Richard of Faulconerville, Trace McDowell and his wife Amy of Madison Heights, Tanya Follett and her husband Chris of Monroe, Misty McDowell of Elon, Trafton McDowell and his wife Ashley of Monroe, and his 3rd son Craig Humphreys of Monroe; three siblings, Richard W. McDowell and his wife Kathy of Rock Hill, SC, Sheila Parker and her husband Harrel of Clarksville and Patsy Hamilton and her husband Donald of Appomattox; eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends including: Fred Gunter, Vic Stacey, Mike Wyland, Peronneau Brown, Colton Brown, Barney Campbell, Chris Towler, Wallace Moe Moore, Neil Massie, Sammy Goff, Josh Brown and Jeremy Cunningham. The family would like to express a special thank you to Jason Tomlin and Cason Ogden of the Deer Creek Boys for recording Rogers original song, Hillbillys Ghost. Moments make life worth living.
