Obituary: Caroline Broadwater Mayes passed away peacefully on 20, 2014, after a long illness. Caroline was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, on 8, 1947, to William Clinton and Dorothy Goodloe Broadwater. She graduated with honors from the University of Kentucky in 1969. That same year, she married John Lee Mayes; they divorced in 1973. Caroline always knew she wanted a career helping other people. Her philosophy for life and work included a belief in he dignity, uniqueness, and unfathomable potential of individuals. For many years, beginning with her undergraduate studies, she gave comfort to those in need and helped the emotionally injured to find peace and happiness. In 1980 she was awarded a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Louisville. In the fall of that year, she accepted a position at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, where her brother and his family reside. In 1985 she was promoted to program director, a position she held until 1987, when she accepted the first of several jobs in the private mental health field. Caroline was interested in both the mysteries of life and of spirit. She loved nature, whether it was a walk in the mountains, beside the ocean, or simply down the street with her dog. Mostly, though, she enjoyed her family and friends. Her body had become tired and frail from disease but her spirit will live on forever in our memories. Caroline is survived by her brother, John David Broadwater and wife Sharon; niece Jennifer Noelle Miller, her husband Todd; their children Noah, Lucas, and Gabriel; niece Renee Clark, her husband Rob, and their son Ayres; and by her wonderful friend of many years, Anne Peet, who has always been considered a family member. Carolines life will be celebrated at a private family memorial. Obituary: Ann B. Mayes Virginia Beach - Ann Blair Mayes, 76, peacefully passed away 31, 2009 in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. She died from congestive heart failure resulting from pancreatic cancer. She handled the fight against this horrible disease in her own terms; with optimism, dignity, humor and integrity. Ann was born in Hopewell, VA to the late Gordon and Ruby Harrell Blair. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Edward Wallis Mayes, Jr., her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Mark Edward and Paula Yost Mayes, her beloved granddaughter, Lauren Rachel Mayes, her brother and his wife, Edward and Rita Blair and Laurens mother, Debi Clevinger Mayes. Also left to fondly and lovingly cherish her memory are numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and her grand-dogs and grand-kitty. She was a graduate of Norview High School and a graduate of the satellite branch of William & Mary currently known as ODU. She will be remembered as a gentle spirit with a strong will, a sense of humor and a lovely humbleness. Heartfelt thanks are extended to Dr. Dean McGaughey and his staff at Virginia Oncology Associates and her Bridge-Hospice caretakers, Peggy Mullins, RN, Laura Manthey, Physical Therapist and Mary Ann Caldwell, Aid and the wonderful ICU staff at Beach General. Smith & Williams, Kempsville Chapel, is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Visitation will be between 6 and 8 evening, 5. A graveside service will be held , 6 at 1:00 PM at Forest Lawn . |
