Obituary: Sylvia O. Mauro, 87, passed away on , 6, 2015. She was a daughter of Philip and Josephine Orfini and was a native of Brooklyn, NY. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Catholic faith. For many years she was a volunteer at the VA Medical in Hampton, VA. She was a member of the Langley Air Force Base Wives Club. Hobbies included bowling, sewing, and crochet. Cooking was one of her great talents and she was especially known for her Christmas cookies. Surviving family members include her husband of over 55 years, Salvatore F. Mauro; daughters, Gigi Braxton, Marlene Mauro, and Debbie L. Mauro; grandchildren, Michael J. Braxton, Celena B. Osborne, and Charles A. Mauro; great grandchildren, Tajaun, Amera, Alyssa, and Maureen; and a host of extended family members. Bright and uplifting attire is invited to be worn to help celebrate Sylvias life in a service to be held on afternoon, 10, 2015, at 2:00, at Parklawn-Wood . Obituary: Salvatore Floyd Mauro, 87, passed away on , 10, 2016. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and was a resident of Newport News. Salvatore was in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a CMSgt. He then worked for a civil service contractor as a procurement analyst at Langley Air Force Base. He retired in 1990 after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Obituary: Rian Thomas Maurer of Manakin-Sabot died on Dec. 27, 2015, several hours after his birth. Rian, son of Christi and Alex Maurer, was born at 25 weeks, along with his brother, Caiden Patrick Maurer. The twins suffered from twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome but endured in utero thanks to the efforts of the medical teams at Johns Hopkins and MCV. Rian succumbed following an emergency delivery at MCV, where Caiden remains in good condition. Rian is survived by his parents, Christi and Alex; his siblings Caiden, Rory, Lily and Gaige; his grandmother, Tracy Thornton; grandfather Jack Hall; grandparents Charles and Betty Maurer, great-grandmother Pamela Harper and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service for Rian will be held at 2 p.m. , Jan. 10, at Woody's on Parham Road. Obituary: Calvin Raymond Maurer of Springfield, Virginia died on May 19, 2016 at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Janet E. Maurer; sisters Katherine Nelson and Mary Lou Maurer; brothers Fred Wesley Maurer and Samuel Kay Maurer; and his parents Frederick (Fritz) and Kate (McMurdie) Maurer. He was born on May 15, 1927 in Logan, Utah. Calvin spent most of his early life in Logan and graduated from Logan High School in 1945. graduating from high school, Calvin enlisted in the Navy in 1945 during World War II and was stationed in San Diego from 1945 - 1946. the Navy, Calvin returned to Utah State University on the GI Bill to obtain a BS in Commerce. He had joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity and was initiated in the Epsilon-Kappa chapter in 1947. graduation in 1949 and eager to pursue other interests, he joined the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant to became a pilot and was assigned first at Randolph Air Force Base (AFB) in San Antonio, Texas, and then at Enid AFB in Enid, Oklahoma. completing flight school in 1950, he was re-assigned to Great Falls AFB in Great Falls, Montana. From there, Calvin was stationed at the Tachikawa AB in Japan while he served in the Korean War. this tour of duty, he was stationed at Travis AFB in California where he met his future wife Janet E. Edwards. She was a flight nurse at the time and they were married on 8, 1955. For the next 25 years, Calvin was transferred to various locations from California to Bolling AFB in Washington DC; to Maxwell AFB in Alabama; to Naha AB in Okinawa; and back to Virginia at the Pentagon and Cameron Station where they settled down in Springfield. During this time Calvin obtained an MBA at George Washington University. Colonel Calvin R. Maurer retired from the Air Force in 1979. For the following ten years, he continued working for a transportation consulting firm in Washington, D.C. Calvin Maurer is survived by his three children - Calvin Maurer, Jr. of San Jose, California; Elizabeth Maurer Berry and her husband Elwin of Auburn, Washington; Scott Maurer and his wife Nicki of Haymarket, Virginia; and his grandson Adam Berry. Services will be held at the Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel on , 28 at 1 pm. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Arlington National . The family will receive friends immediately following services at the Ft. Myer Officer's Club.
