Obituary: Beatrice B. Massey passed away in the early hours of morning, 20, 2016, just weeks shy of her 90th birthday. She passed quietly and peacefully in her home per her wishes. She was born in Wilson , North Carolina, where she grew up with a large extended family of the Bunns and the Barbees. She graduated from Rock Ridge High School with the class of 1945 that still holds their annual class reunions in Wilson. Following graduation, she, like many others of her time, moved to Washington, DC in the position of Civil Service clerk with the Social Security Office to process the soldiers returning home from the war. During this time her family migrated to Newport News for the promise of jobs and a new future. Her dad told her it was time to come home and join the family in their new house. A young man she had known in North Carolina was assigned to Fort Eustis, Virginia at this time. Dick Massey and Beatrice, having known each other in Carolina, rekindled their relationship and married in 1947. Dick was still in the Army and they both worked at Fort Eustis, she as a bookkeeper and he as a heavy equipment mechanic. worked and saved and in 1954 they purchased a small family grocery business on Big Bethel Road, then a small two-lane oyster shell covered roadway. The business was renamed Masseys Grocery and Gulf and would provide the grocery, gas, feed, and seed needs, as well as barber services and auto servicing and apartments for the neighborhood for nearly three decades. Later the business became a resource for light farm equipment and trailers. In later years Bea worked as a bookkeeper for Roses Department Stores. While growing their business they also managed to raise their four children and be an influence in their neighborhood. Bea and Dick lived on Big Bethel Road for over 70 years. Bea was a friend to all the children of the neighborhood . she always supplied the goodies at neighborhood rodeos and gatherings. She was a longtime member of Abundant Life Tabernacle. She was a long standing member of the Bible Class School, a member of the choir and Ladies Auxiliary, and served as the Secretary-Treasurer for many years. Her longtime friend and teacher Pastor Glen Jones will officiate her service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Mamie Bunn; her husband, Dick Massey; son, Terry Massey; brother, Eugene Bunn; and son-in-law, CW4 Raymond Frank. She is survived by her sister, Rachel Richards of Williamsburg; her daughters, Wilma Frank and Peggy Weaver of Clarksville, TN; her son, Gary Massey and his daughter, Racheal Massey of Hampton, VA; and three other grandchildren, Sally Garret (Curtis), Darrell Adkins (Jill), and Brett Adkins (Whitney), all of the Gloucester area. In addition, she leaves eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was Aunt Bea, Mom, and Granny to many . she was a great friend to all. At her death she was attended by her loving caregiver, Gwen Bridges, who filled her with much joy. In her passing she will be loved and honored by all who knew her. Love you, Mom. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 pm, , 23, 2016 at Parklawn-Wood . Obituary: Kay Estep Massengale, 62, made a transition from this life to the next at a Medical early morning, 21, 2012. She was the beloved daughter of the late Leonard and Catherine Estep. Kay grew up in the Ft. Defiance/Mt. Sydney area, and graduated from Fort Defiance High School in 1967. She then attended Virginia Commonwealth University, where she met her former husband, George Massengale, who once upon a time stole her heart after he became the first student at VCU to publicly burn his draft card during the Vietnam War, and a few years later they were married in London, England. Kay lived for years in Hawaii, which was always her paradise, and then lived in Los Angeles, where she made some of her most cherished, lifelong friendships. Since 1989, she has lived in Staunton after coming home to take care of her aging parents. Kay was an innovative thinker, writer and visionary who studied the deeper aspects of life, and like all great scientists and explorers, she yearned to understand how it all works. She always used her heart, skills and knowledge from her exploration to help people lead more empowered and happier lives. Kay also walked the path of peace and compassion, and used her time and resources to uplift all beings, including the tiniest creatures, animals and people. Her door was always open, and she had that special quality of being a deep listener to the many people that poured their hearts out to her. Kay has left behind many loved ones whose lives are better because she lived. These include her beloved first cousin, Janet Wetzel, and her many friends that were like family, including James ONeil, Dana Scott, Lee Martin, Billy Gordon, Leslie Robinson, Claire Linden, Philip Knopp, Ben Knopp, John Zyke and Betty, Jennett Ingles, Linda Thornburg, Louis Mitler, Alice Patler, Jalyn Gray, LeLe Johnson, the late Kim Craig, the late Arlene Gordon, Shannon Gray and Harold Wells, Laten and Chuck Bechtel, MacKenzie and Nahla Gray, Lila ONeil and Mary Lou, Katie Savage, Nicholas Patler, and many others. We love her more than words can describe. Kay also cherished her four cats, Zume, Golda, Monkey and Max, along with the squirrels and wild birds that visited her house daily, all of which she devotedly loved, and fed several times a day (and she would not want us to leave out the ducks, geese and swan at Gypsy Hill Park, especially her favorite, Ray, a partially blind goose). There will be a viewing at Reynolds Hamrick located at 18 West Frederick Street in Staunton, VA, , 27 from 6 to8 pm, and a graveside service at Thornrose on , May 2, at 2 pm. There will also be a Kay Celebration sometime near the end of May, which will be announced on Facebook and by email. |
