Obituary: 18, 1923 \ 26, 2014 Army Brigadier General Nikitas Constantin Manitsas, died at his home in McLean, Virginia on 26, 2014 after complications following heart surgery. He was 90 years old. He will be buried at Arlington National on , 18, 2014 with full military honors. A West Point Academy Class of 1945 graduate, General Manitsas served in the Army for almost 30 years before retiring in 1974 due to a family members illness. He spent the last two years of active duty as Commander of the Defense Contract Administration Services Region, New York, an organization of 110 officers and 3500 civilian employees. In 1975, he was recalled to active duty for an assignment in the office of the Secretary of Defense to head a study for Congress of non-appropriated fund management and procurement throughout the federal government. He retired for the second time in 1976. While he and his wife, Hilde, were making plans to travel the world post-retirement, the corporate world beckoned. He joined Parsons Corporation, an international engineering and construction management firm - assuming duties as an executive with the DeLeuw, Cather/Parsons Joint Venture for the design and improvement of the AMTRAK railroad in the Northeast Corridor between Washington, DC and Boston where he was in charge of the planning and contracting of the $2.5 billion federal project, involving the negotiation and award of over 150 architect-engineer contracts to U.S. firms nationwide and for multimillion dollar materiel contracts. In 1981, he joined an automobile dealership holding company which operated several foreign car facilities in the Washington area. He served as president of the company retiring in 1993. Nikitas Constantin Manitsas, a native of Batavia, New York, graduated from high school at age 16. Since he didn meet the minimum entrance age for West Point he attended Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire from 1940 to 1942. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point on 1, 1942 and graduated in the accelerated Class of 1945 in three years; he was then commissioned in the Corps +of Engineers. In 1950 he received a Master of Science degree in engineering from the University of Illinois, and in 1964, a Master of Arts degree in international relations from the George Washington University. He graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1958, and from the Air War at Maxwell Air Base, Montgomery, Alabama in 1964. General Manitsas was fluent in 5 languages. His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, three awards of the Legion of Merit, the Army Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Meritorious Service medal. General Manitsas married anesthesiologist Hildegard Wessel, MD in Washington DC on 26, 1963. Her death on 24, 2014 followed his passing 29 days later. will be buried together on , 18, 2014 at Arlington National after a 9 oclock funeral service at the Old Post Chapel on Ft. Myer. A brunch reception at the Joint Henderson-Ft. Myers Officers Club will follow the burial.
