Obituary: Niel T. Mortensen passed away on Feb. 17, 2013 at Utah Valley Regional Medical . He was born Mar. 23, 1947 in Gunnison, UT, and was raised in Ephraim. Niel was the third of five children born to Sherman and Roxie Mortensen. He spent his youth working with his father sheep ranching and farming. He graduated from Manti High School, and then embarked on an LDS mission to the Northern States Mission. He joked that he never felt warm again after living two years in the frozen north. He graduated from Weber State with a degree in Biology. He taught junior high biology for several years. leaving teaching, he worked several jobs, including selling real estate. Niel was married for a time and had two children, Justin and Geniel. Even though their lives were completely separate, he kept their pictures by his bedside until the day he died. Niel loved God and country. He was proud of the time he served in the National Guard. He loved to fish, listen to country music, eat shrimp, and chew bubble gum. There were many other things he loved doing and watching, especially in his younger, free roaming, crazy years, but these are best left unsaid. Niel had many struggles in life. He met the bipolar mental disorder and physical challenges he faced with aplomb. He left an indelible impression, for good or bad, on most people he met. He was who he was, no excuses, no apologies. He usually had a humbs-up, a salute, or a handshake for everyone he met or passed on the street or in the hall. Occasionally he would even introduce himself by saying, Hi, Im Niel. Im a nut. One of his favorite cousins, Brent, said of Niel, His problem was that he left Ephraim. He should have never left. In Ephraim, he fit right in. Niel was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Kay and Lee. He is survived by his children, probably many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, his favorite rother-in-law Michael, and two sisters, Fern, and the other one. A million thanks to Dr. Eppich and all the staff at the Provo Dialysis . A billion thanks to the caring staff and administration at Provo Rehabilitation and for their years of dedicated service. treated him with kindness and respect. The committed, caring servants in his LDS home Branch and all his friends and fellow residents at the care center were like his family. A Memorial Service at Provo Rehabilitation and will be held for Niel on Feb. 28 @ 4:00 pm to reminisce and remember Niels life.
