Obituary: John Harvey (J. H.) Mangum 16, 1933 â 14, 2012 John Harvey (J. H.) Mangum (aged 79), beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away in Orem, Utah, on 14, 2012 after a long illness. He was born 16, 1933, to Milton and Vera Thomson Mangum, in Rexburg, Madison Co., Idaho. He joined three sisters, Marjorie, Adele and Lois. Another sister, Virginia, died shortly after birth. He spent his early years in Rexburg. The family moved to Logan, Utah for his father to attend Utah State University where he earned a degree in journalism. John attended schools in Logan, Utah and Arlington Co., Virginia when his father, Milton worked as editor of the USDA monthly newsletter under the direction of Ezra Taft Benson, then Secretary of Agriculture. John went to the University of Utah for one year before serving in the North Central States Mission. He returned to Utah to attend Brigham Young University where he received both a BS and MS in Biochemistry. He received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Washington in 1963. He accepted a position on the biochemistry faculty at Brigham Young University, where he taught and conducted research until his retirement. The choice of a career in the sciences set him on a course of demanding research during which he made significant strides in discovering pathways for cures in various types of cancer. He spent a year on sabbatical at the National Institute of (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. He was known nationally and internationally for his contributions. He collaborated with researchers in various parts of the world and traveled throughout the U.S. and the world presenting his research findings. He married Sandra Stonehocker, daughter of Clarence Thomas and Frances Hill Stonehocker, on Sept. 12, 1957. To their marriage came four beloved children. were later divorced. He leaves behind the children and their spouses â Michele Frances (Gary) Steggell, Marcia Lynette (Stephen) Bennion, Leslie Kathleen (Bruce) Browning and Bryan John (Terri Day) Mangum. He is blessed with posterity of 30 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two of his sisters survive him â Adele (Dave) Putnam, and Marjorie (Calvin) Madsen. His sister Lois (Tony) Bernard passed away last year. His parents preceded him in death. He was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various callings including missionary, Elders Quorum leader, ward Seventies leader, Scout Master and Teacher. Though always busy with research which was his real calling in life and having long periods of time away from home, he spent as much time with the family as possible. Following retirement he developed a hobby of collecting memorabilia â electric trains, Cabbage Patch and Madame Alexander Dolls. He also collected art and Dr. Pepper items. He shared these items with his children and grandchildren who loved him dearly. He quickly became a beloved friend to all who met him. His cheery smile and jovial personality will be missed. He was found delivering rhubarb pie, donuts or cookies to friends and neighbors. He had a second sense for what those around him needed. One of his favorite quotes was, Have I done any good in the world today? The family wishes to express thanks to his caregivers at DaVita Dialysis, Canyon Breeze , and A+ and Hospice who assisted the children in making the end of his life comfortable and peaceful. Services will be , 21, 2012, 1 p.m. in the Northridge 12th Ward, 165 East 1780 North, Orem. Family and friends may call at a visitation that morning from 12 - 12:45 p.m. at the church. Obituary: Jessie Faun Mendenhall Mangum Jessie Faun Mendenhall Mangum, 84, peacefully passed away on 27, 2006 in her home in Spanish Fork. She was born in Payson, Utah in 1922, as the tenth and last surviving child of Jesse Mendenhall and Margaret Maria Terry. She met and married her beloved husband, Dana Don H. Mangum in 1939. lived in San Diego until Dons retirement from the grocery business in 1986. moved back to Payson at that time, to be closer to both of their remaining family members. Don died of natural causes in 1987. Jessie is survived by her two daughters, Terry Lee Allen (Ray) of West Valley and Dana Michele Clay (Dane) of Lacey, Washington, and 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Services will be held , May 1, 2006 at 2:00 p.m at the Spanish Trails Ward Chapel, 90 South Main, in Spanish Fork. Friends and family may call from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the church. Obituary: Jane Alder Mangum Our loving mother and wife Jane Alder Mangum, 67, died , 6, 2006, from heart failure. Jane was born at her home in Midway, Utah, May 20, 1939, the daughter of Burton & Margaret Alder. She graduated from Wasatch High School, Heber, Utah, in 1957. She married Fred Tony Mangum on 24, 1957, in the Salt Lake Temple. Jane was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a Primary and School teacher and in Relief Society as a compassionate service leader which gave her many opportunities to bless the lives of others. Jane was known for her generosity and constant concern for others. No one ever left her home without receiving more than they arrived with. She lived for others and her family and friends were greatly blessed by receiving her love and care. All who knew her have felt the blessings of her generous spirit and she was greatly loved and will truly be missed. Jane is survived by her husband, Tony, her siblings, Inez Wilde, Mary (Jerry) Walton, Burton (Sheri) Alder, her children, Norma (Brian) Thayne, Bill (Carolyn) Mangum, Paul (Anne) Mangum, Natalie (Chris) West, 16 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. services will be held , 9, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the Orem 1st Ward Chapel, 80 South 280 East, Orem, Utah.
